Grex Kitchen Item 30: Wonderful smells comming from the kitchen
Entered by steve on Sun Mar 14 23:10:40 UTC 1993:

Glenda and I were remarking the other day how nice the smell of
garlic cooking in olive oil was. It conjured up memories of things
for both of us, which made kind of a warm-fuzzy-feeling.
What smells from the kitchen do you find espically wonderful?

Garlic, Ginger and Black beans cooking in a wok is a wonderful
smell, I think. When I pass by a Chinese place and smell that I
can get hungry even if I've just eaten.

Bread, in the final stages of baking...

Geez, STeve, you hit mine right off. From as far back as I can remember,
I've always loved the smell of garlic in olive oil! I grew up in a mostly
Italian neighborhood, and my mother learned many good Italian dishes. It
was a frequent odor in her kitchen and I loved it every time. <happy sigh>

You also nailed mine.. Garlic and ginger smell wonderful when cooking.
I don't think anything really compares with the smell of fresh bread baking,
though (and anything with cinnamon in it smells wonderful, too..)

Besides those mentioned I'm fond of the smell of chocolate baking,
be it brownies, or cookies, or whatever. And even though it's
not a kitchen odor I have to mention autumn's leaves in a slow-burn.
That's my favorite aroma.

I like the smells of many herbs and spices, particularly curry, basil,
and soupy things with bay leaves. Basmati rice smells great, too; it
settles into the kitchen and gives off a "master chef at work" aroma,
even if you're cooking something that's really simple.

I like the smell of malted barley being brewed -- before hopping. Some of
the odors produced by brewing and fermenting can be really nasty, e.g.:
hydrogen sulphide, even though they outgas away and leave no residue.

But the smell of the malt during mashing and early in the boil is terrific.

Hunters' stew, a 24 hr slo-cook, creates an amazing aroma also. But
if you wnat to sell your hosue, bake bread just before the buyers arrive,
it's worth about 10% increase in sale price, but I digress, sory.

Hey, John and I first saw our home during an open house, but
we returned a couple of weeks later for a second-look showing.
It was just past suppertime when we arrived and the house
was filled with the wonderful aroma of a freshly prepared Mexican
meal. I can remember the feeling so well. Like it could be a real
home, not just a place to change clothes and eat take-in.

And it is.

Streaming sunlight at high noon sold me on my apartment. Me and the
plants are quite content.

I like the smell of anything baking, be it cakes, cookies, or bread.
I also like the smell of a turkey roasting in the oven.

What about onions frying in olive oil? Mmmmmm! Or freshly bewed dark, rich
coffee? In the fall apple cider with cinamon sticks boiling on the stove.
Scuse me. . .I have to go eat now.

It is such a kick to step into the front porch (not even in the house
yet!) and smell that Kenn has baked bread that day.

Then there's the unmistakible aroma of: Latkes!

Naomi made what she would call chicken paprika and what I would call chicken
paprikash today, which has got just the warmst smell imaginable. Filled the
whole basement. It was great.
