This item is for questions, issues, computer questions, whatever, that aren't related to food. This way, you won't have to go to another conference [like agora or any of the computer related conferences] to ask specific questions/address concerns, then have to find your way back here.

Ok, this was started in part, by the item drift in the 'cheap eats' item. Sindi had said some stuff and then asked what item it was. I then asked--couldn't she scroll back a bit to see what the actual item is. She then talked about various computer program stuff that I don't know [or necessarily need to know] all the details-since I can't help with those things. So, my next question is, Sindi, even though you can only scroll back about 25 lines or so [as I understand you saying], as grex goes from one item to the next, doesn't it tell you at any point what the item header is? If not, how do you know what you're responding to or asking about? [Or perhaps that's the reason there IS a lot of drift and unrelated comments in various items throughout the conferences.] Why wouldn't the various methods of reading the conferences here on grex allow you to do such a thing [as seeing what specific items are that you're reading]? It seems like it should--or if not, perhaps finding one that does let you know...
What I'm not understanding is why Sindi is using backtalk instead of bbs? bbs is designed as a text-interface for the conferences. A simple telnet or ssh connection to Grex allows her to use the conference software that was designed for exactly that purpose.
About the 'skipping it' [on starting a new item for drift]-- When I'm looking for something specific here in the food/kitchen conference, I want to be able to go to the appropriate item and reread it to see if my question has already been discussed. So I don't necessarily want to read through a bunch of unrelated stuff. And if what I'm looking for isn't there, I'll then ask my question in the specific item but if there isn't an item for that topic, its time to create one. I know I've been known to drift, too, so if anyone sees any of us here drifting, politely let us know to take the conversation elsewhere, where its more appropriate. Or create a new item, if needed. There *have* been a lot of interesting spin-off discussions in our items and I've learned a lot from all of you--but its sometimes hard to go back and find what I need if its not in the item I'm looking for. Especially since I'm really trying hard to get on track with cooking at home, not dining out as much, trying to eat healthier, I'm currently going through a lot of items here to get information... [and a lot of it, I'm copying over to a text file so I can read it off-line].. So, as a FW in this conference, I'm trying to do better in keeping things on topic and on track. I may not always be successful, but I'll try my best. I want us all to be able to learn from each other. :-)
I'm co-opting this item to talk about canned broth vs. homemade. And you can't stop me. ;-)
cool. or hot?
Hot. I'm currently trying to find a good recipe for veggie broth. I think I want to replace all of my other broths with that.
I start with roasted skins. Roasted tomato skins, potato skins, carrot skins, onion skins, beet skins (careful with the color on these). Carmelized onions, low, slow, and nothing else added in a single layer in a cast iron skillet. Add celery, fresh onion, herbs (I like parsley), a bit of lemon juice to perk up the flavor. Sometimes, if the final recipe warrants, I use a teaspoon of tomato paste as well.
denise, have you tried using the search features to find things in the conferences you are looking for?
Typing h at the 'respond, .... quit' prompt gave me the header. Where do I look for other keyboard commands? I do type 'bbs' to get to the conference, not backtalk. I forget whether we are using picospan or fronttalk now in bbs.
Sindi if you type "menu" at the system prompt, you will be given a guided tour of how Grex works. All of the information you are looking for is there.
Keyboard commands that do something from bbs: a - displays some response, don't understand e - enter new item f - find - how does this one work? m - lists my mail n - exit this item, next time it will be new p - pass q - quit r or t - respond or type (same thing) w - who is online f might be helpful to Denise.
menu, z - picospan guide. find "word" all from the OK prompt is supposed to find all instances of a particular word (type that not "word").
It worked amazingly fast and showed me a list of all items in this conf with 'broth', listing which response they were in and the entire line of text
[phew, we're kinda back on track, thank you very much. :-) For the time being, at least!]
