I would like to set up an internet access for the public (for a fee) in my town. I was wondering how much it c\would cost, and where/who i could get it from. THe college has a line, but it is for students, and me only.

How did you get your access from the college originally? Did you pay them lots of money, or was there some person who was able to get access for you? If it was a person, see if they can pull anymore strings and get you a connection through the college. If not, then talk to somebody at the college and see if you can either convince them that it's a worthy enough cause that they should help you with it, or see how much money they want.
Oh, come now. Let's give the lad a bit of a taste. I've been quoted that it'll cost my anywhere from one grand($1,000) to set up *if* I have the right equipment, and anywhere from $200-$800 per month in fees. So, I'm looking at in initial $1200-$1800 investment. Would be worth it, however, seeing as how the jcc1.merit.edu dialin lines are busy all the time now with all the GOPHER morons running around. Gopher - the nightmare continues.
I would imagine the cost probably varries greatly depending on where you are and how sympathetic the people at the local college are to what you are trying to do.
It will also varies on what type of services you wish to get from you Internet Provider. Will you be reselling this service to other people? Do you want a company that will spend time with you helping you troubleshoot a problem, or one that only worries about it's point of demarc? Do you want to be attatched to BACKBONE provider, or are you looking for a local provider? Do you want to be attached via 9.6k, 19.2k, 28.8k (I think this is the next step), 54k, 64k(ATM), 128k(ISDN), T1, or T3? Will you be providing your own routing services, or do you want the provider to do these for you? Or are you looking for just looking for someone to supply you with a dial-in account?
...and after you fill in our lovely form(in triplicate), you are entitled to be even more confused. Wait until you try to register for a domain name. First time experience, never done it before? Might take 3 or 4 tries.
i would like to resell the servie on a monthly or yearly basis.
