We curently have the old Grex Eagle hooked up again. If there are any files you would like to get out of your old home directory, now's the time to do it. We will leave this data on line for abpout a week, after that, it will be backed up onto tape, and the disk will be reformatted for News.

Neat! Thanks, Grep. Er, Greg.
Oh, crap! I meant to put this in agora so *everybody* could see it. Could somebody move, link, shuffle this over to agora?
This is now linked from staff to agora. Note folks: /home is seriously full, so if you can download your files instead of leaving them in your home directory, this is a Good Thing.
Good news! Thanks for the hard work I'm sure it took to get this set up, greg. Now my stupid question: where are our old home dirs located on this disk (been a while since were on the Sun2; my how quickly they forget ;)
Look in the directory /grexold/h0d/u.
Given the current space problems on /home, is news really a top priority for what to do with an extra disk? It might be a better use of this disk to use it for more space for home directories until we get the new disk on line.
We are concerned about the long term reliability of the Eagle. Witch would you rather lose: A couple of days worth of news, or all the user files? We are working on other solutions for user space , the eagle is for news.

Greg, et al Great news! THanks guys!
Greg, thanks *very* much. I've already pulled off a couple of files which had some stuff I really wanted but managed to delete just when the Eagle originally went down. Will check out the rest RSN. Thanks!
I vaguely remember some commands we used to have on the Sun 2 that never made it over to the Sun 3. Can anybody name these?

This item is now linked from agora to Internet because I imagine Internet users who didn't see this in agora might be interested. For those of you who were not on grex before (December 93? January 94?) go ahead and forget about this. For the rest of you: What they meant to do in the transition from the extremely old Sun2 to the moderately old Sun3 was to copy all of your files from your old home directory to your new one. Due to lack of space on the partition that was to hold the new home directories, they did not copy over your News subdirectory or its contents. So if you were reading Usenet news a few months ago (you knew there was a reason why I linked this to the Internet conference) you will want to see if there are files in grexold/h0d/u/kaplan/News which have been missing these many months. But replace "kaplan" with your own id.
Thanks for linking this, Jeff, this is the first I've seen of this article. (The Agora boycott continues...) Though I love news dearly, I'd much rather lose that than my personal files. What I do worry about is this: Is the current Internet link ready to send us news and handle all telnet sessions at the same time?
From comments at the time, I know I'm not the only one who accidentally deleted stuff after the move which is now still available on the /grexold disk. Besides news, if you lost stuff through your own fumbling fingers (or brain), check it out soon.
Ok, flip is now here. I haven't tested it beyond checking that it will run without crashing Grex. Someone who uses it regularly might want to test it on a test file to see if it works OK.
The /grexold disk has now been backed up. This means that it's a candidate for conversion to the news disk, and users' old files from the Sun-2 won't be available for much longer.
Hooray! Hooray! :)
