There's a new electronic magazine about the Internet, called "Internaut." We have a pointer to the current edition in the "Bookshelf" area and under "What's New on the Internet?" Volume one issue one is currently available. It has an interesting article about cable internet (sort of like cable tv--that's a scary thought ;-). That might be something we might want to consider if the technology is available and the price is right. It involves a modem to send requests out and a cable connection to receive data. This would be ideal for our usenet news and (maybe) for ftp and http. Can you see Grex getting wired for cable?

Might as well use this item for something.....speaking of "Lots of news": I've been watching ITD (UM) add a few thousand newsgroups. While I recognize prefixes like rec., alt., sci., and some others, there are many more that I don't. Some seem to be state abbreviations, but I'm not sure. Here is a recent bunch: can anyone tell me what they stand for? cl, ucb, fido7, nz, su, tnn, fj, pdaxs, git, ucsb, tw, ont, uw, umn, co, finet, iij, bln, prg, zer.
I've been getting the same thing from the U of M School of Engineering feed I use. Here are the ones I know: ucb Universirt of California - Berkeley fido7 Almost certainly a Fidonet-gated group nz New Zealand su Probably "Soviet Union", the domain still used by Russia fj Fiji ucsb University of California - Santa Barbara ont Ontario? umn University of Minnesota? uw University of W???
Yes, I've tried guessing some of them too (co=colorado?). cl and zer are German: zer might be Zermatt, but cl? [You say, join them and ask? You must be kidding...] Where is the master directory?
*Is* there a master directory? >8)
Sure, just mail user services at Usenet, Inc. and they'll send you one. :)
Really 8^? What's the address...
Well, that is the problem...
For the edification and/or entertainment of anyone that is not watching 5000+ new newsgroups scan by on the UM ITD server, here is a sampling of what you are missing. This has been edited *slightly* for compactness. I also biased the sample, by starting with a newsgroup concerning what the media think is the sole subject on the internet. Newsgroup alt.sex.watersports not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup cl.europa.allgemein not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup rec.arts.comics.elfquest not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup um.test not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup cl.energie.diskussion not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup fj.rec.marine not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup ba.personals not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup tw.bbs.netnews not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup su.class.cs342 not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup finet.helsinki.hoas not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup finet.freenet.tyoryhmat.yhteydet not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] Newsgroup srg.ticker not in .newsrc -- subscribe? [ynYN] I can't believe I've scanned pushing 5000 of those - and missed the two newsgroups that I had requested to be added (before I knew that one does not request - one just gets dumped on). There is absolutely no logic or order in these listings, and as indicated earlier, no way to search a newsgroup list. It is a Tower of Babel.
For those who don't parlais the vous, "watersports" is the euphemism for sexual acts involving urination. Yes, I do know people stranger than myself. >8)
*I* didn't know *that*.
Shouldn't that be "urialsports"?
