Grex Internet Item 33: Hurray for the information explosion!
Entered by curby on Thu Mar 3 14:21:10 UTC 1994:

I was asked by one of the hosts(?) of this board to post this message that
I sent to a few people when I got this off of the IP mailing list. It was
some of the first good news (ie NOT dealing with the Clipper Chip debate)
that had come from the list in a long time, and I guess that I got excited
seeing it.

Anyway, here it is.... Please read and enjoy...

If you want pass this message around, I am sure that you can so long as
you do not change any of the original message. (My part I don't care
about!) The message is archived in /home/kaplan/Inet/curby.

One of the emerging technologies that is going to change the way Americans
view communication technology is thru the use of video conferencing. Even
those <bleep> "...YOU WILL" commercials from AT&T seem to be saying that
video conferencing is still "on its way". (You know the commercials I am
talking about right? The ones where the mom tucks the baby in from the
payphone, and the student asks the lecturer, "So where does jazz come from?".)

And yet, from this message that I got from the Interesting People mailing
list, it seems that our youngest generation is already starting to use
this new technology. And over the INTERNET, no less!

Is this a great time to be part of the information explosion, or what!

- On Friday, February 25, 8th grader David Young was interacting via
CU-SeeMe with Greg German, a researcher from Ohio.

- David asked me if Greg could send us Maven...a program that would allow
us to send audio across the Internet.

- Within 2 minutes Greg sent a binhexed version of Maven to me.

- It took another two minutes to install and launch Maven, and make an
audio connection with Greg!

=> We were viewing each other via CU-SeeMe and talking to each other via
Maven - all over the Internet...and we were really excited!!

- We immediately called Laura C. at CNIDR to tell her of our discovery.

- We sent Maven to Laura via Fetch and within 2 minutes she had installed
it and launched and established a voice connnection with Oceanside and Ohio.

- Then Laura told Jane who told George who told Don who told
Priscilla...and within another 10 minutes we were all looking at one
another via CU-SeeMe and talking to one another via Maven...ON THE
INTERNET...it was beyond cool!

- Finally, Greg called Charley Kline, the author of Maven, and told him
what we were doing...and Charely also became excited...because there had
never had more than a 3-way conversation before...so Charley joined the group
via CU-SeeMe...and the students thanked him personally!

- Then Greg played music for Oceanside and Oceanside showed a video,
complete with sound to everyone else...our imaginations were running wild!

- In less than 30 minutes Ohio, California, North Carolina, Illinois and
Virginia shared and implemented their discovery - and the impetus was an
8th grade GSH student!

It makes one wonder what other great and historic events CAN and WILL
occur when students and their teachers are enrolled in the Global
Schoolhouse!

I just had to share this experience with all of you!
Yvonne

Wow! I was impressed yesterday that I can grab images easily on the
World Wide Web. When an image or a pointer ends in ".gif", I press a
button to have it sent to the Grex machine. I then send it by zmodem
to my machine and use a gif viewer.

Things like what is described above are actually happening. I saw one
link (which doesn't work with lynx, only Mosaic) that shows a real time
picture of a guy's office. If I had the right connections, I would
have taken a picture in Pennsylvania when I pushed a button in Ypsilanti.

The technologies are just beginning.

Cool. Is there a DOS version of that program?

#3 of 8 by carl on Fri Mar 4 13:02:41 1994:

If you mean the one to take the pictures, it requires Mosaic 2.? and
a full Internet connection. I have no idea what hardware/software is
used at the other end where the picture is taken. I could get you
the guys email address if you want more info.

I was referring to the program referred to in #0. Carl must have slipped in.

I am not sure if they program exists for the DOS world. MAC's have the
built in microphone that makes the process SO much easier then having to
write something with lots of device drivers 'cause IBM doesn't like
standards. So I would doubt if a shareware version of a program like that
exists for the DOS world.

but ya never know...

If somebody makes a microphone for DOS machines (I assume somebody must) they
would probably have existing device drivers.

Carl, do remember what the URL was for the realtime office picture?
I have a fast enough net connection here that I'd like to try it...

This is the closest I could find. He has added more than what was
there the last time I looked. This is Henry Houh's Home Page and
it has several pointers for live demos.
