Many thanks to Steve (srw) for installing lynx! I've been hoping we could get a connection to the World Wide Web, and it now exists. I've been write some hypertext files (just type "lynx" and you'll see some of my work), and "marking up" some of popcorn's files (which are about Unix and stored locally). What would you like to see on these menus? Do you have or know of files that could be "marked up?" Are there links or subjects that you'd like to see added?

We have lynx! Wow thanks to all involved I'm gonig to check it out right now.
I'm happy to announce that one of my original goals has been reached! We now have access to an online newspaper. As of 11:00 this morning, it was yesterday's issue of _USA_Today_. My guess is that it will be replaced daily and that we will continue to get free access to it, however, both of these are assumptions at this point. It is listed in the Internet section under "News and Weather" and "What's New on the Internet?"
If anyone is interested I have Yanoffs List in html format. ;-)
Thanks, Brad, but I think we're set. When you run Lynx on Grex as a non-member, the html isn't so useful, since you can't follow the links out onto the net anyway. So, for non-members, we have a local copy in text form, and there are also instructions available on how to dial up a public Lynx Client at Michigan State via Merit (for us Michigan people). This gives everyone access to the WWW via Lynx. Just start Lynx on grex and follow the WWW pick. For Grex Members, A pointer to Yanoff's list can be found by choosing "Internet" and then "Internet Connections" and then "Telnet Sources" Scott Yanoff's list is pointed to at CERN. The advantage of using a pointer (URL) on the WWW rather than a local copy, is that we don't have to worry about updating it.
I have a tutorial on html from Jeff Brown, U. of Houston stored at: /u/mwarner/www/html It is in some ways similar to other entry level "how-to" html guides, but it has the advantage of having been written as course information and so contains an overview of context for those interested in such things. By the last half of the document, some more complex (relatively) stuff is laid out fairly well. This is not an html file, and so is best read using "more". If srw or carl want to grab this, I think the listserve information is in the document; or they could take a copy of my file. I'll be moving it off-grex eventually.
Does anyone have a list, or can direct me where to browse a list, of the various error codes and their meanings associated with the dreaded "Error - Forbidden by rule" screen? I tried browsing the CERN pages looking for this, but didn't see anything obvious. The latest one I'm interested in is 403, which I received when I tried to see a .jpg URL on one of the grex member's pages. I thought maybe this was due to grex' prohibition on graphics in web pages, but then I saw janc's photo on *his* page, so...
Jan's photo is stored on another site, so grex's graphics prohibition doesn't apply.
Indeed the "rule" is stored in the server's rule file. Our server has rules that prohibit files with those names, so that is definitely the cause of that error. I have been notifying members who are keeping graphic pages on Grex that they have to find another site for their pages.
Hi, FYI you can run Lynx from DOS using Bobcat or DJ Delorie. The DJ version is based on 2.7 and need 386. The Bobcat is based on 2.4. For further information see www.fdisk.com/doslynx You can browse using remote Telnet lynx bbrowser from info.funet.fi or trfn.clpgh.org. Regards (AW)
