Grex Internet Item 20: Internet dial-ins around the world
Entered by kaplan on Thu Feb 3 13:56:15 UTC 1994:

I have friends or relatives in places like Ft. Lauderdale, FL,
Rochester, NY and Lorain, OH with modems. How can I help them
find systems like Grex connected to the Internet so they can email
with me?

If you have friends in Boston looking for something like grex, check out
world.std.com.

There is a lorain county freenet associated with Oberlin.
the domain name there is freenet.lorain.oberlin.edu, but I don't have
info about their local phone numbers. No guarantee, but you might
try sending a request to
info@freenet.lorain.oberlin.edu
and they might tell you how to get your friends/relatives connected.

I have no info on Ft. Lauderdale or Rochester.

#2 of 18 by scg on Fri Feb 4 00:54:31 1994:

The login for the freenets is typically "guest" or "visitor" as the login,
with the other one as the password (very confusing). If you get to them
through the msu gopher, it will have instructions on how to log in.
Is world.std.com a free system, or is there a fee for it?

#3 of 18 by scg on Fri Feb 4 01:05:19 1994:

For the record, world.std.com charges five dollars per month plus two dollars
an hour. Anybody know of something free in the Boston area (something that's
really like grex...)? Interestingly, fingering at world.std.com produces
a message saying it's a "public access system," which is what grex and m-net
call themselves too. It wasn't until after I started to run the newuser
program that it asked me to agree to pay the charges.

public access <> free access

#5 of 18 by srw on Fri Feb 4 13:37:34 1994:

This is certainly true. Panix in NY and Nyx in Denver are both
public access fee systems, I believe. I will ask my son in Boston
and see if he's heard of one.

Re: International Internet Association

From info@iia.org Mon Jun 13 15:27:57 1994

From: IIA information autoresponder <info@iia.org>
Subject: Information about the Int'l Internet Association

[ This is an automated response to your email to info@iia.org. If you have
questions for a real live person, send them to info-person@iia.org. ]

[ Note -- This is a beta version of this doccument, and may not be 100%
accurate. Please report apparent innacuracies to info-person@iia.org. ]

Q: Who is the IIA?

A: The International Internet Association is the largest non-profit provider
of free Internet access and services in the world. We are a Washington
based association (with technical facilities in New Jersey) dedicated to
the free flow of information without regard to position or affiliation.
The IIA is primarily composed of engineers and computer and network
enthusiasts dedicated to this ideal. We work diligently to ensure that
all aspects of our society, be they individual, corporate, social,
educational, intellectual, virtual, or correctional, have the opportunity
to take part in the world of tomorrow, which we believe will be online.

Q: What services does the IIA provide?

A: Currently, the IIA allows a full-access shell account on one of it's
SUN SparcStation 10 hosts, with access to a full suite of Internet
services including email, gopher, Usenet news, FTP, wais, WWW, IRC, etc.
The IIA also offers a very easy to use menu system to further ease online
   navigation.

The IIA will also be offering, in the near future, UUCP and SLIP access to
the Internet. Please see the 'uucp' and 'slip' info bulletins for more info.

The IIA is also in the initial stages of developing a graphical client
interface that will run on any PC, and will bring the Internet, with
point-and-click ease, directly to your home or office.

The IIA also plans to soon start providing information services to their
users and to the net as a whole, such as books on-line and health-care
advice, and on assisting various worthwhile associations, such as the
National Association of Elementary School Principals in communicating with
their members and furthering their goals.

Q: What is the IIA's electronic mail address?

A: The IIA's email domain is 'iia.org'. (NOT iia.com). Requests for
information should be mailed to info@iia.org. See the info file
   'addresses' for more interesting addresses.

Q: How do I get access?

A: If you're on the system, type 'info application'. If you're not, the
'info@iia.org' auto-responder will send you one if you send it a message.

Q: If you're a non-profit association, what is your source of funding?
How do you pay for the services you provide?

A: With difficulty. Wheeling & dealing, elbow grease, and luck. Currently,
the majority of IIA funding comes from private contributions. The IIA
is a not-for-profit association incorporated in the District of Columbia
   November 18, 1993, and have a federal 501(c)(3) non-profit application
pending, which will enable us to receive tax-deductible donations.

Q: Why does the IIA request a credit card number, and why does this
"non-profit" organization change for calls made via their 800 number?

A: First, a credit card number is only required for 800 number access. If
you do not provide a credit card number, we simply remove your ability to
access us via our 800 number

Unfortunately, the IIA is not yet in a position to allow local phone
coverage for the entire nation. Thus, an 800 number is provided to
allow flat-rate access to our services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
from any point in the domestic US, including Alaska, Hawai'i, and
   US Territories.

Also unfortunately, 800 time is not free -- We have to pay for it. We
simply pass on the cost to the user. We do not, nor will we ever,
charge for access to the Internet.

Q: Why do you have a DC address when you primarily operate out of NJ?

A: Originally it was planned that we would launch our operations from the
nations capital. Several of our founding members live in that region
and the symbolism is very strong. Unfortunately the reality of the swamp
by the Potomac is that they have one of the least capable
telecommunications infrastructures in the nation. Our attempts to make the
IIA function from a technical standpoint were so fraught with problems
that we ultimately decided to work instead from our research facility in
New Jersey. We still do a great deal of our administrative work out of
Washington D.C., and will maintain operations in that area.

Q: Why are you providing local access in NJ, but not in DC? When are you
going to provide local access in DC?

A: The IIA is currently trying desperately to get itself caught up -- The
huge influx of applications into the offices caught everyone a bit
   by surprise.

Our current focus at the moment is to get our system stable and fine-
tuned, and our files caught up. Then we will address the above concern,
   and others.

Q: Why are most of the calls to the IIA answered by a voice-mail system?

A: The IIA gets an absolutely huge number of calls and electronic messages.
new staff has been hired to answer the phones, answer voice-mail, and
answer electronic mail, but the sheer volume (of both incoming data,
and backlogs) still prevents us from being as "reachable" as we would
like to be. Most of the IIA people work 14 or 16 hours a day trying to
get things caught up, so give us some time.

Ummm...some time ago I d/led a long list of public dial-in's all across
the USA. Some are free, some are not. Trouble is, this was compiled in
1992, I think. I wrote to the author but he is no longer maintaining the
list. He recommended I post to a specific USENET group but at that time I
didn't have USENET access and never tried that. Still, I have this list.
If anyone would like to see it, mail me at <take6@grex.cyberspace.org>
and I will happily forward you a copy. Beware though that the response
will come from a different address which you CANNOT respond to. Re-e-mail
me at the grex address.

For a list of freenets across the country, get into metronet.lib.mi.us
This is a free public host with free Telnet, gopher, www, etc. In one
of its menus it has (actually the 1st one) it has a Greater Detroit
Freenet and other freenets across the country. I think there is over a hundred
and when you select one you are automatically telnetted to the site, where
youusually can open an account (usually for free and get e-mail, etc.). to get
in:

at the username: public
at the password: library

this is all FREE stuff and worth the price.

I couldn't help noticing that all the 313 numbers there are Ann Arbor
numbers, and that there were none listed in 810. The Detroit area must be
commercial-Internet-providor deprived.

I believe you will find plenty (520 approx) listed as 313 in the Horst Mann's
list. (Type "menu" at the OK, then select "Other Menus." The list has not
been updated to reflect the change from 313 to 810, but there are numbers
galore.

I don't know if any one can help me on this subject, but I will try any ways.
I know of a couple of BBSs which only allopw you to connect by dialing up,
this is a problem when you live far away from where the BBS is located. What
I am asking, is, does anyone know of any Outdials or GOD(Global Outdials)
which I can access through Telnet, and the internet. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance

I would not expect anyone to run a free outdial which you could telnet to,
but it might not be too expensive for someone to set one up in the town with
the interesting BBSs. I would ask on the BBS in question, and I would ask
the ISPs in the area if they want to sell you dial out service for that
purpose.
