This item will be where we post notes about files we have found relating to the Internet. Soon now, we will have ironed out exactly where the directory itself will be. Once we have done this, we encourage you to post notifications here, rather than creating new items to post the file, as that may cause duplication of efforts, and a consequent waste of space.
9 responses total.
Note that for now, since we don't have a central clearing-house yet, hold those notifications. Your f/ws thank you.
Since our file area isn't set up yet, look in /home/bartlett/inet/lynx.txt for a guide to using the Lynx system at U of Kansas for your net-surfing pleasure. This file will be moved when we get the directory set up.
/home/bartlett/inet/usenet.faq: a basic frequently-asked-questions (faq) document about using various Internet tools, (Archie, .signature files, and much more.) /home/bartlett/inet/find.address: a document about methods for finding Email addresses for people you know are connected, but for whom you can't get an address in any other way. Thanks to Carl for these files.
The following is the index of files currently available in ~bartlett/inet.
Each entry contains the name of the file, its size, and a brief description
of what's in it. Right now, they're all text files.
Cut here
find.address 11472 bytes
description: provides suggestions for how to use internet tools, such
as finger, whois etc for finding an unknown Email address for a user on the
net.
ftp-list.txt 112361 bites
description: contains what claims to be a comprehensive listing of
international sites accepting anonymous ftp.
internet.faq size: 23088 bytes
description: an over-all faq (frequently-asked questions) document
containing questions about Archie, ftp, Email, etc. This is a very
basic-level document.
lynx.txt size: 26251 bytes
description: This is the main help document for Lynx, the text-based WWW
client. Lynx provides a user with the ability to navigate the Internet as a
single distributed environment. This document can be found in its hypertext
form by telnetting to kufacts.cl.ukans.edu, logging in as "kufacts" then
pressing "?" or "h" at the prompt.
whitehouse.txt size: 16347 bytes
description: This document contains a description of various ways of
obtaining the texts of press-releases, speeches, etc from the White House.
There are several methods of doing this, either through subscribing to one
of the big services like Compuserve or America On-Line, or via Email from an
automated Email server. This information is almost 9 months old however,
and may be suspect. I am checking it out at this time.
(note) the index, which I'll keep adding to as files appear, can be found in
~bartlett/inet/index.
Gee, no one has added to this item in a long time!! The collection of Internet-related files is now stored i the directory /usr/local/inet Here are quick descriptions of some of the files I've added recently to that directory: caen-active: list of usenet newsgroups available on a news server at U of M ftp-faq.txt and ftp-sites.txt: frequently asked questions about ftp and sites which provide anonymous ftp service gotten by remmers from usenet nsfnet.txt, michnet.txt, INDEX.documents, and INDEX.acceptable.use.polocies are files I got by ftp from nic.merit.edu when researching the rules governing the use of the Internet. index: bartlett's index to files contained in /usr/local/inet. Oops, I guess these descriptions go in index instead of here in the conference. Oh well, I'll let Bartlett fix the index file.
I think it's appropriate to put new files' descriptions in this conference as well as in the index, so that people are notified that there's something new.
I have compressed most of the files in /usr/local/inet using gzip. Please see (and tell me what's wrong with) /usr/local/inet/README. I removed ftp-list.txt because it is superseded by ftp-sites.txt. I still have ftp-list.txt on a local disk if anyone wants a copy. I made some additions to the former index which is now called INDEX. I created a subdirectory called Merit to separate the four files I downloaded from nic.merit.edu from the rest of the collection.
Only thing wrong I spotted in README was in your example: The commands should be "zcat whitehouse.txt" and "zmore whitehouse.txt".
Oops. After writing the README file, I decided to uncompress some of the smaller files, including whitehouse.txt. I have changed the README file to reflect the change.
