The neighborhood ice rink opens in a few days and I'm determined to actually
learn to ice skate. So does anyone out there know how to ice skate? Maybe
have some advice? My usually feat on the ice is to hang onto a friend...or
topple over.

It's been years, but if I remember correctly, you propel yourself by putting
your feet down angled outward, and pushing outward, but switching to the other
foot and pushing outward in the other direction before you fall over. That's
probably easier to demonstrate than to describe, but you're kind of far away
for me to be able to demonstrate it, I think. ;)

A lot of time in the ice skating class I took in Kindergarten was spent
focusing on what to do if you fall. The big thing, according to the teacher,
was to get your hands up off the ice as quickly as possible, since if they're
on the ice it's possible for somebody to skate over them accidentally and cut
your fingers off.

Item 39 is also a Skating item. Do you know how to browse item titles
in a conference? Anyway, #39 melted. Good luck with #74. It doesn't
matter much what you do to start skating - just watch other people.
Taking lessons will help, of course, but I'd recommend a group lesson
for beginners. By the way - I can't skate. However my wife and daughter
are into it big-time (they compete).

I tried ice skating a couple of times in my college days. Ankle stability
was the problem - so a lot of hanging onto people or falling over for me.

Never been a skater of any sort, really. So I probably won't be
participatING much in this item. :)

Re: #3 I was under the impression that #39 was reserved for rollerblading not
ice skating. I'm not sure how items in here are suppose to overlap.

Well the problem I've encountered is that I don't seem to be able to push with
my left foot. I'm right handed (and from this experience, obviously right
footed) so my right foot is strong enough to push outward but the left foot,
well it pushes a little. I end up doing 3/4 or more of the work with my right
foot and it starts to hurt after awhile. Anyone else encounter this kind of
problem?

The other problem seems to be I haven't figured out how to stop yet :) so I
start skating and going kinda fast andd um, hmm, hope nobody tries to skate
in front of me. Eventually friction wins and I do stop. I've also seen
people actually lift their foot and skate to turn corners whereas I just kinda
lean in one direction to make my skates turn. I'll have to investigate
lessons (and hope the aren't too expensive for my lack of student income)

I don't want to say there is any problem in starting a new item, especially
if an old one is moribund. Personally, I like to stir up old items and
use them. The advantage of this item is that it would be found with
a scan on ice as well as on skating.

I think some group (mob) beginner skating lessons are provided through
community rinks. The cost should be mostly the ice time (and equipment
rental). Ask at your nearest rink where you can get an introductory
group experience (and rent skates).

I've got my own skates. Of course I couldn't find laces long enough so I had
to combine two but hey, whatever works.

I did ask about the lessons but they sort of couldn't find the brochures as
today was opening day here and things are kind of hectic.

I went skating anyway. It turned out more as a feat to avoid kids (who had
the day off from school due to some teacher convention?) Sigh.

I wish I could be that young and have no fear :) I'd be able to get out on
the ice and imitate what I see much easier without fear.

I did some skating last year. I really need to get my own skates. I have a
friend who skates alot, she's even done some shows.
