The other day a bunch of us were wandering the student union and found this list of clubs in the nearby area. It's of course very difficult to tell the atmosphere of a club by its name, address and phone number on a piece of paper. However none of us have ever done the clubbing scene and we wouldn't know what to ask if we were to call up those clubs to find out more of what they are like. So a question to the masses, is there anyone reading this conference who has done the clubING scene and if so, what differentiates one club from the rest and how do you decide which club to go to?

Club as in dance club, not as in chess club, right?...
Yes, dance club, like the stuff you see on t.v. with lots of people and music and dancing. Anyone explored that path in real life?
Closest I get is karate, but my dojo has occasional potlucks. It's a nice bunch of people. I used to be a sound tech, so I worked in bars a lot. I don't like going to clubs because of the smoke, though.
Is there such a thing as a smoke-free bar/club?
Heh. Depends on where you are, and I think you aren't in Ann Arbor where I could make suggestions. :) In Ann Arbor is the Gypsy Cafe, which does acoustic rock and folk and so on, coffeehouse atmosphere but with good music. No smoking, but no alchohol either. There is also some org that does a monthly substance-free dance somewhere, but I've never gone to that.
In this area (Kalamazoo), I like to go to the Zoo on Sunday nights because they play good music, and the people are college-age or older. Also, the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids does an Alternative/Industrial night on Wednesdays, Rap/Dance/Techno on Fridays, and Retro/Disco/Eighties on Saturdays. Kegger's in Kalamazoo is good on Saturday's if you love cheesy 80's music, but the crowd is around 18-23, with a heavy concentration of drunk frat and sorority people...not bad, but my tolerance is thin for ditzy people in general, whether or not they're in a Greek club doesn't matter. =)
No, I'm not in A^2 and I realize it's hard for people to recommend clubs elsewheres :) I guess I was just looking for some sort of general atmosphere qualities... i.e. if I see "X" I should run away fast or such... any suggetions that way or is it too difficult to tell from appearances?
Well, cannibalism is a bad sign.. Really, though, there are all kinds of clubs and it's going to be pretty hard to make a blanket recommendation when nobody knows much about your tastes.. Some people's "out of control" is too tame for others and it's hard to guess what other people think of as a good time..
