This is the Singing Item! It's about high time there be one on
Grex, that's for sure.... So, tell us what you like so sing, and of
course, *who* you like to hear sing!
Some of my favorite stuff: I luv arias (of course,) and right now
one of my favorite art songs is "Kling!" by Strauss. But I also like to
sing the easy stuff, like rock and jazz. To listen to: Lexi Cregger
(juliette) and Cecilia Bartolli.
(There is no limit to what ppl like, so this should be a prolific
item-- have fun!)

My favorite ballad singer is Tom Waits. I'd love to be able to put that kind of feel into a song.
I'm a mezzo-soprano, which is the range that Natalie Merchant sings at (to compare it for non-music buffs). I like to sing "These Are Days", but that's the only song I like by the Manias. That fits my voice well...I also like to sing anything that I *can* sing, so don't ride in a car with me...I'm warning you. =) I like to listen to Enya, Sarah McLachlan (another I can sing), and Geddy Lee of Rush...his voice is so unique! My favorite singer on the planet, though, is my friend Maggie. She is *GIFTED* with a beautiful voice. She cnan sing any note without screeching or sounding like she has a cold. Right now she's at Eastern on a Music *and* Voice Scholarship. It's like hearing an angel...
I sing every Saturday at an "alternative" church service, and every Wed in a Methodist church choir. I sang at a wedding last week, and the selections were from John Lennon, Leonard Bernstein, and the Lord's Prayer. Yesterday I sang at a Leukemia Society benefit, and the selections were from Nanci Griffith, Wynnona, Melanie, Judy Collins, the Cox Family, Allison Krauss, Carole King, and Indigo Girls. In two weeks I have another wedding, the selection is Schubert's "Ave Maria." Then, Nov 15, I am the featured artist at the Green Wood Coffee House Concert Series, and I have not yet completed my set list. Donation only $5.00! Come for music, coffee, and dessert!

I'm marking my calendar for November 15th and plan to be there unless the Green Wood Coffee House is in Arkansas. Someday I'm going to be able to say, "I knew her when...". ;-)
It's on Green Rd near Glazer Way. I just got a "gig" today singing at First United Methodist Church in Brighton, in NOvember. They said I could either be paid $150 to $200, or have the offering collected. This is for 50 minutes of music. I am amazed. I don't get paid to sing at my church(es), and I really don't intend to accept this money.
Accept it and donate it to Grex....(new motto: "Sing for Grex").
#7 : *chuckle*
Getting paid to sing in church should be a must, but lots of churches
believe that the community should provide, or there should be none at all....
)= A lot of churches need good music, but none wants to provide it, and no
one wants to pay for it......
I cannot WAIT until school starts; Opera Workshop this year is gonna
rule. Birdy, I hope someone thinks that highly of MY voice someday....
jeez.(;
hoiii
I like the songs of S.P.Balasubramaniyan ... he lives in India (Tamil Nadu Madras) he is a famous tamil (Alanguage in India) singer ... I love his voice and i usally keep singing his songs then and there ...
Arianna -- I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope you *are* nationally recognized one day. =)
Saravana (cool name, btw,)-- I have never heard of this artist (of course...I don't claim to be the end all be all of musical knowledge), could I maybe...get you to send me a copy of some of his music? Birdy-- !!! Why thank you!
I also do lovethe songs of SP.Balasubramanyam...He has sung in 4 to 5 Indian languages(namely,TELUGU,TAMIL,KANNADA,HINDI).He is a prominent singer with high quality voice. He meddles with the words in high and low tunewshhhhhhhh4 tunes spontaneously.Ofcourse India is is a rich country with rare traditions. Not to forget Dr. Balamuralikrishna's voice and the songs sung by him. I do love Mr. Illayaraja's(from India) music. He is a international figure.
Guys there is one more young Indian whom you cant' forget from Music World. He is slowly changing the scenario in Indian Music world. That is our great A.R. Rehman.
Hey, but are there any good classically oriented Indian singers?
Hey I like lata Mangeshkar the un beatable, i think Arriana at least has heard this name from India? and of course nothing to beat the new breed of singers from india, but why are we turning to indian Vs world? )), music is o i think a global phenomena what do you say guys?

Hello everybody! I am new to the world of grex. I have one problem, I am unable to download the information in conferences into some file. Can somebody help me out.
Hello Arijit Did you try 'ftp'? It should work if I am right.
I think we should have jazz and r&b . I am very fond of Boys to Men and Motown selctions.
Jazz is great stuff, even though I\'ve never sung any of it myself...ah well, there's always time to do so.... (BTW: to all interested, in January will be the performance of the IAA Opera Workshhop, and we'll be doing scenes from Le Nozze di Figaro, Hansel and Gretel, and Magic Flute. I'm playing Gretel and Pamina. (; )
Sounds great, arianna! I love to sing, but as a service to my fellowman, refrain form doing so in public. <otter slips away to avoid capture by the pun police>
<birdy nabs her before she slips away> Arianna -- be sure to let me know when your performance is. I live only an hour from Interlochen, and visit TC frequently anyway.
I will sing anything that I know the words to and always sing along with the radio. In fact, when we were growing up, my sisters and I would sing in the car and between the four of us, our parents said that they couldn't hear the radio anymore :) I will listen to just about anyone sing (few exceptions) I think because I like singing with people more than I like singing alone.
Oh, I forgot to mention....I'm actually not in Magic Flute anymore...as it happened, MR. Norris (our director, my voice teacher,) had to cut some times off the show, because it was turning out to be over two hours as it was, so...I'm n ot playing Pamina after all. Yes, he did just cut out the coolest duet in the show (with perhaps the exception of the Papageno and Papagena duet (; ), but that's show biz. The performance is very soon, within the next two weeks I believe -- I'll get the exact date and post it here, for birdy and others interested. (And thatnk you for the interest! MAkes me feel as if my exisitance as a performer is not unwarrented and overlooked.) (;
I can't wait to see the show, Arianna. It sounds wonderful. Let me know about any other shows you're in also.
IAA Opera WOrkshop Performs on Saturday and SUnday, Jan. 25th and 26th. For ticket info and directions, call 616-276-7200 and ask for the box office.
Wow! I wouldn't mind seeing the Magic Flute someday. How'd it go? Does the Green Wood coffee house still exist?
Yepper! Just had our first concert of the season, Mulligan Stew. Next month, Fri NOv 14, is mine, and then the shows continue the 2nd Fri of each month, excepting December. In May come hear Ben Helmke as Mark Twain, opening for David Bowen and Andy Stewart!
Poo! That's in conflict with the Bardic Night sponsored by the local druids. Tough call...I'll have to try and check it out. Will you post the location/directions closer to the time?
