Grex Ing Item 1: The Ruling Item
Entered by jdg on Sat Dec 7 17:47:39 UTC 1991:

Welcome to "...ing." Here we talk about things we do for pleasure, fun, and
relaxation.

The Rule of ...ing:

Each item header should be of the form: "The <activity>ing Item."
eg:, The Rowing Item, The Bowling Item, The Downhill Skiing Item.

This is so that those who browse can find their item of interest, and because
no other conference has a rule like this.

(This rule is not required for linked items from other conferences.)

Have Fun!

6/3/92

The disk drive where conferences reside is nearly full. To help alleviate
this, I am instituting a cleansing of inactive items in the ING conference.
These items have not had any activity in more than 120 days, and have been
retired. You have an additional 10 days to request that I revive the
items. On or after the 13th I will remove these items from the conference,
and they will be available from my personal archives on a request basis.

-Josh, your loyal (and friendly) fairwitness-

item nresp header

2 18 The Cross Country Skiing Item
  3 6 The Juggling Item
4 8 The SCUBA Diving Item
  5 3 The Racing Item
  8 12 The Exercising Item
  9 5 Horseback ridING

The exercise item is interesting, I had entered something similar in the
sports conference, much more specific. If you keep it, I'll summarize
that one into #8.

#3 of 40 by jdg on Thu Jun 4 12:40:32 1992:

Item 8 has been unretired, Mustafa.

#4 of 40 by mistik on Thu Jun 4 16:53:47 1992:

Thanks!

#5 of 40 by jdg on Tue Jun 9 12:28:42 1992:

Due to mju's message about critical shortages, items 2-5 and 9 have been
removed and archived early.

#6 of 40 by jdg on Thu Aug 27 06:04:02 1992:

The /h1b disk drive was 99% full tonight, so I removed and archived
these items, which all have not been active in more than 90 days:

item nresp header

  7 22 Picture-taking Item
12 26 How does your garden grow?
13 25 The financial planning item
 14 10 The Morotcycling Item
 17 9 practicING martial arts

Sorry to give no warning, but I felt it was helpful to return 49K of free
space to /h1b ASAP.

#7 of 40 by jdg on Fri Nov 6 04:14:22 1992:

These items have not been updated in more than 90 days, and will be removed
over the weekend unless I receive a request not to. The /h1b disk where
conferences reside is 99% full.

  8 20 The Exercising Item
10 23 The Grex Bicycling Item

#8 of 40 by jdg on Sat Nov 7 21:28:13 1992:

Items 8 and 10 have been killed. Thank you for your support.

#9 of 40 by mistik on Sat Nov 7 21:41:09 1992:

Thanks Josh.

#10 of 40 by jdg on Fri Jan 1 15:09:20 1993:

Due to tight disk space on /h1b, I've removed (and archived):

 18 The Flipping Item
 20 The Jargon Using Item

as these items have not been updated in more than 90 days.

#11 of 40 by jdg on Thu Jan 21 12:13:33 1993:

Due to the severe space crunch on /u (/h1b), I have removed
and archived these items which have had no activity in more than
90 days:

6 136 The Meadmaking, Winemaking, Beermaking, and Drinking Item
22 1 RC models (cars, boats, airplanes, rockets,...)

#12 of 40 by jdg on Tue May 25 03:19:35 1993:

Conference cleanup time. It's been four months since the last reap.

These items have had no activity in more than three months:

item nresp header

 16 13 The BorING Item
 19 12 The CanoeING Item
21 14 New products (the shopping item)
 23 10 The CafeING Item
24 4 The Stamp CollectING item
 26 3 The Sleeping Item
 28 9 Cross country

Item 28 is also item 9 in the Nature conference. Deleting it from this
conference will not remove it from Nature.

I plan to make this reap, and archive these inactive items on Friday,
June 4. The items will be frozen until then.

#13 of 40 by jdg on Tue May 25 03:23:05 1993:

Clarification: all but 28 will be frozen. It's linked.

#14 of 40 by mta on Tue May 25 06:29:24 1993:

...well, not that I can promise anything, but it seems possible that
activity in item #19 might pick up now that weather's nice...

#15 of 40 by jdg on Tue May 25 21:38:55 1993:

ok, 19 is unfrozen. I hope it gets some activity.

#16 of 40 by jdg on Sun Jun 6 02:47:54 1993:

The inactive items described in the 5/24 response have been killed.

#18 of 40 by bjorn on Wed Oct 4 22:29:46 1995:

This shows even better judgement than when I owned the Dark Sun
conference. Imagine picking up Fwing tips after retiring from
the position... There is a lot of janitorial work to be done
in that graveyard, without making archieves.

Re#17: Can we have what?

Some of the old items seemed to have linked interest.
Maybe we had too many of similar content as well?

#19 of 40 by scott on Mon May 20 01:23:20 1996:

I have taken over this conference, after Josh got reaped. Josh, if you show
up again you could have it back. In the meantime, it's part of my tiny
empire.

Soon I will have more conferences than Carson! :)

Adminstrata:

Not much will change. If I think of an Ing topic I'll start it and see who
still follows this conf.

#25 of 40 by remmers on Thu Nov 12 11:29:37 1998:

I am lodgING an official complaint regarding the background color set
for this conference in the Backtalk pistachio interface. Neon lime???
When I look away from the screen, everything is pink!

#26 of 40 by scott on Thu Nov 12 11:49:57 1998:

Sure. I think everybody should have their perceptions messed with. ;)

#27 of 40 by remmers on Fri Nov 13 11:33:13 1998:

You've succeeded. Seriously though, it's painful to look at.

#28 of 40 by scott on Fri Nov 13 20:05:05 1998:

Don't trifle with me on my own turf, John.

#29 of 40 by remmers on Sat Nov 14 13:37:20 1998:

Oh great, now it's neon pumpkin. Eyestrain city.

<remmers seriously thinks that screen colors shouldn't be fw's
"turf" and Backtalk should let users override fw choices, just
like Picospan does for other things. But that's not something
that's going to get resolved here. In the meantime, hmmm, maybe
I'll just take this cf off my cflist...>

#30 of 40 by scott on Sat Nov 14 19:51:23 1998:

(Scott thinks that remmers must have the voltage on his monitor set a
bit high. ;)

#31 of 40 by scg on Sat Nov 14 20:34:05 1998:

I don't usually use Backtalk, but I came into this conference using
BackTalk to find out what the fuss is about. The background color looks
kind of greyish to me. Did it get changed again, or are remmers's video
settings extremely different from mine?

View source shows the background color set to DCDCDC, which should be
grey, so what I'm seeing makes sense.

#32 of 40 by scott on Sun Nov 15 13:40:06 1998:

I changed it again. The pumpkin color actually wasn't the most obnoxious
shade in that part of the spectrum, though.

#33 of 40 by remmers on Sun Nov 15 15:13:26 1998:

Thanks for changing it. (I'm in Picospan now, so the issue is moot
at the moment.)

#34 of 40 by keesan on Tue Nov 17 00:30:02 1998:

I am curious what color DIY is, to me it is amber on black.

#35 of 40 by remmers on Tue Nov 17 14:27:13 1998:

In the old days when I did all my computing from text-based terminals,
amber on black was the norm for me too. It was easy on the eyes, and
I got quite used to it. The new freedom allowed by bit-mapped color
graphics is both a blessing and a curse.

This conference is now a pleasant black on light gray, I'm happy to see.

#36 of 40 by remmers on Tue Nov 17 14:30:35 1998:

(Although I should add that when I see light-on-dark on a web page
or terminal screen nowadays, I find it vaguely unpleasant to look at and
regard dark-on-light (preferably, black-on-white or black-on-offwhite)
as much nicer. Interesting how one's preferences change over time.)

hello wanted to see if anyone is still on this fourm

#38 of 40 by cmcgee on Thu Apr 8 14:50:20 2004:

Oh yes. People read these things far more frequently than they post.

#39 of 40 by gregb on Mon May 10 18:21:14 2004:

Surprising since the last post before April wsa November, '98.
