What does the following mean?
Nasty return from editor: 1

Means you shouldn't sass your editor.
Out of curiosity, what else was happening when you saw this message? What led up to it?
It's a Picospan message. Picospan prints it when you finish editing a response and the editor terminated in a way Picospan didn't expect. So when you saw the message, what editor had you been using, and did you exit it in a different way than you usually do?
Let me think. I was responding to an item, with vi as my usual editor. I had read in a long file (a bbs item in one of the conferences). The original file was about 100-200 lines long. After editting, the response was about30-50 lines long. I exited in my usual way, with the ZZ command.
Hmm, probably an irreproducible result.
