Help! I've got Smartcom for Windows in vt320 mode, and it works for a lot of the sites on the Internet. Unfortunately, I've had several experiences like the following: You Rang? telnet 35.8.2.61 Trying 35.8.2.61 ... Connected to 35.8.2.61. Escape character is '^]'. AIX telnet (burrow.cl.msu.edu) Type gopher to log in To report problems with this system send mail to gopher@gopher.msu.edu login: gopher Your terminal type is currently set to [ vt320 ] I don't understand your terminal type Connection closed by foreign host. You Rang? Does anyone have any suggestions, recommendations? Is there anyone that has Smartcom that can log in at 35.8.2.61?

I just tried it using vt100 emulation and it worked fine for me.
I tried switching to vt100 and it still gave the same message about vt320. I'm already wondering if I restarted the software after changing the term setting... I'll give it another try.

Not all. There are gopher clients for DOS, Macs, X Windows, etc. In principle one could write a gopher client with any kind of user interface one wanted.
Rebooting the software made the difference. I'm now using vt102 for everything. BTW, several systems (gopher-blue included) recognized and accepted vt320.
Is there any advantage to using vt320?
Not over VT102, for standard Unix stuff. There *is* an advantage to using vt102 over vt100, though -- a vt102 can do some kinds of screen updating more efficiently than a vt100, and some of the editors (vi, emacs) take advantage of it.
