Gopher question... I just tried at the public access Gopher on Michnet which you access by typing U-MGopherblue at the which host prompt. My question is can you trnasfer files using gopher? If you can will they go to my computer, or the remote U-M computer I'm logged onto... I know this isn't a Grexing question but I thought someone might know the answer. My apologies if this is the wrong forum...

Aside from direct screen/buffer capture, which may or may not be a PITA, I don't know.
All the files they have there, if you type an = will list where the files are located on their local system, and most of them can be ftped with anonymous ftp... I got a internet dictionary via that method once.
Neat!

You're actually very, very close. The protocol used to transfer files isn't FTP, but the paradigm you've described is basically how a Gopher works. Of course, there are objects other than files that a Gopher client can retrieve. They include directory lookups, WAIS searches, telnet gateways, and so forth.
What protocol does gopher use?
Probably the Gopher protocol. I don't think it uses a previously- defined file transfer standard.
The "gopher" protocol is roughly identical to the "finger" protocol - client sends a line of text, server blasts back the file down the same connection. Pretty simple.
