Hello there Bharat. The way to practice Unix commands here is to telnet or ssh in. Log in with your userID and password. At the command prompt, you will be at the Unix shell that you chose when you set up your account. You can type commands from that prompt that will execute simple unix activities. You can also save files of Unix scripts in your home directory and execute them.
and teh best start is with man <command> to read the directions. and teh <command>s are found in: /usr/local/bin /suid/bin /bin /usr/bin /etc /usr/local/etc if you have access to a bookstore, _unix for dummies_ might be a slilghtly better start.
This is an old thread, but in the name of practicing unix commands, I am answering this from within my shell account. The command is "bbs". For anybody who stumbles accross this post, the method I prefer is a program called "putty.exe" which is downloadable free of charge. Before your account is validated, the only commands you can use are limited, but you can try "ls <path>" which shows a list of files. Also you can use "pwd" to see which path your home folder is in. for example, "ls /" will show the toplevel directory of the grex system. I used "pwd" and saw that my home folder was "/x/f/a/falcon". Further, I typed ls "/x/f/a" and saw the name of my home folder "falcon" along with other folders. Finally, typing "ls /x/f/a/falcon" showed a list of files and directories inside my home folder - the personal space for a user on a unix system. Anyway, I hope that helps anyone reading this, and now I know how to access the conference from within the shell.
That's how I'm on too. I think it is the cleanest way to use the conferences.
Getting validated for access to a real Unix shell and lots more commands on Grex is as easy as sending an e-mail to porters@grex.org and requesting it. Be sure to include your username so we know who to validate. We try to respond to requests within a day, and often do so within a few hours or less.
"Just do it"!!
Response not possible - You must register and login before posting.
