Grex Info Item 37: Need bbs numbers in Maryland.
Entered by garima on Wed Apr 28 00:35:26 UTC 1993:

I have already entered an item in the general conference about this.
So you may kill it wherever appropriate. I wonder if anyone can
help me out. I am looking for bbses in Maryland that would let
me have an internet address to receive and send mail without
having to call long distance to MIchigan.
Any suggestions of where to look , who to ask etc are welcome. Thanks.

If yoou happen to have an INternet-connected account, all you relly
that's ... really ... need is an internet-access-phone number.

Which you can get from Merit at their Whichh host? prompt. The
local number for 2400 baud access is 764-4800 adn then type help.
You'll get a menu of stuff to select from ...

If you have an mts account, signon and run mnet:access (if it
still exists). Basaically same stuff

And I jsut checked ... there are dial-ins from area codes 301 & 410, with
teh listed cities, Annapolis, Baltimore adn Fredrick.

I can call merit at 764-4800, and I can also call merit locally and
get to a WHich Host? prompt in Ann Arbor. But I cannot dialout from it
without an authorization code and I have given up trying um-mnet -
it's always busy.
The dialins with 301 and 410 area codes.... you list those from
a Which Host prompt? right?

#4 of 19 by tsty on Thu Apr 29 10:38:39 1993:

yes, but indirectly, you have to activate the help command (a server)
at the Which host: prompt. So, the "host" you are requesting is help .

Do you have any UM account? If so you can telnet and dial-out, without
eeither, ... nope ...

WEll, sorry, you can buy a Merit account whichh will allow both, but
I don't knowt the costs or hoops-to-jump-through.

There is a system "Digital Express" (access.digex.com) in Maryland which
has internet access - cost is about $20/mo.

Not on MD, but oh well...There is a new system, Speedway Internet
Access or something like that, offering *free* shell accounts,
UUCP accounts, and even SLIP/PPP at some point. The catch:
they're long-distance from everywhere, since they are connected
directly to AT&T via a T1 or something, instead of going through
the PSTN. You have to dial through AT&T by dialing
10288-1-503-520-2222.  You pay AT&T rates to Oregon (I think;
I 'll know when I get the phone bill for this month...);
no additional fees. I'm fairly sure that they make their money
through kickbacks from AT&T for generating traffic, though that's
just speculation.

At any rate, I went through their version of "newuser" earlier
this evening. They ask for a voice number and supposedly will
call you to verify you; they also ask for your real name,
address, etc. I don't know if they'll give you an account without
that information. I'll have to see what it's like once they
activate my account. (Oh, they also have -- or claim to have --
realtime ANI delivery and recording activated. So don't call
from a number you don't want them to have.)

I read through this item because I have family members in the
Washington D.C. area (Northern VA, actually) who would like to find
a BBS or public access system. Something Grexlike or a FreeNet would
be perfect. At $20/month digital express sounds like it might be too
big a hammer. Email is the main desire here (though - like an
addiction, I'm sure they'll soon be craving the whole internet).

How should I go about helping them find what they need?

There is a freenet in Washington (cap.gwu.edu). I don't know it's phone
number, though. Will Grex be accessable from Merit without the access code
when it's incoming telnet opens up?

Thanks, Steve. I should be able to locate the info I need just from
what you've given me. (I hope)

Hmmmmmmmm, friends WAshington DC area ........hmmmm.......isn;t that
where a couple lonly disk drives are awaiting their mating with Grex?

What's the possibility your friends will be traveling this way RealSoon?

Ans would they appreciate the company of MegaBytes of companionship?

#12 of 19 by rcurl on Wed Dec 29 04:19:24 1993:

I expect to be flying to Dulles in March or April. How big are these
drives?

#13 of 19 by mju on Wed Dec 29 20:14:52 1993:

Most likely too big for commercial air travel, unfortunately.

#14 of 19 by srw on Thu Dec 30 01:26:24 1993:

Re 11: Don't think I haven't thought of it. It's not likely they'll
be in Ann Arbor in the next yaer or so. If I were to visit them by car,
I'd offer to bring the disks back on the return trip. NI have no such
trip planned as yet.

I telnetted to cap.gwu.edu but couldn't figure out how to work
their anonymous account. Undaunted, I ftp'd (anonymous) and found
the instructions. Login=guest password=visitor.

I called my friends and gave them the info they need to do the same thing
by local call. With any luck, I'll get an email message from them rsn.
Thanks again for the name - this looks like it work really well.

I have reviewed the "Other menus" option which you can get to on the
"Menu" command at the OK prompt. There is a huge list of area code 313
bbs - about 500+ in the 313 area. Is there any way to find such a list
for other area codes? Right now, I am trying to help a freind in the
Tecumseh - Adrian area and that is in the 517 area code.

Ok, I'll try. A couple of more questions.
1. Do I give the command exactly like you have shown with an "!" preceeding
    it?
2. How can I give a print command to print an entire file, rather than
indexing the screen and doing a printscreen?
Thanks, Valerie.

By your question, I now think I understand. I thought a direct command
enabled the printer. I am using BitCom and it has a feature to turn
Print Capture off/on. I'll try that.

Thanks.
