Ever since I got my new laptop with Windows XP, pine, bbs and telnet haven't worked well when I connect to Grex. Mostly lines get truncated about 10-12 characters, but I also can't move around in Pine responses, and telnet is driving me crazy with its flakyness. Is there a knowledgeable Grex guru who can help me figure out how to reset my stuff? I use HyperTerminal to dial in to Grex.

Get rid of your current telnet client and replace it with putty.
right! I even have that already on my computer. Duh!
Nice idea. Didn't work. Can't ssh from Grex or from my computer. Something about host computer didn't accept some idea from Grex's ssh. In the meantime, I'm still not able to see complete lines of type. I think it's Hyperterm that's causing part of my problem.
Hmm, that's because grex's SSH is woefully out of date. Try using putty with just telnet (not SSH),.
Hm. I have no trouble ssh'ing to Grex using putty on XP. Check the putty settings and make sure it's set to accept ssh1 connections.
(you mean make ssh1 connections, right?) It sounds like grex is insisting on using the IDEA algorithm for symmetric encryption of the connection, and PuTTY doesn't do IDEA (probably due to patent restrictions). So I'm guessing that the connection has already been made (using SSH1).
i was able to make connections to grex using blowfish, 3des and idea (des and none were rejected); so whatever is happening it's not a lack of ciphers in the daemon.
Unless, of course, none of those ciphers are supported in the client, in which case we could be said to have a lack of ciphers in the server.
Here are my PuTTY connection settings for Grex:
Protocol: SSH (Port 22)
Disable Nagle's algorithm
Proxy type: None
Preferred SSH protocol version: 1 (this is probably the crucial one)
Authentication methods: Attempt "keyboard-interactive" authentication
(All other SSH options are unchecked.)
Like I said earlier, works fine with XP.
Ok, thanks, I'll try that.
what exactly can i do with this shell
Puuty
