Normally when you join a new conference for the first time, the first and last
items show up as "new."  Is it possible to force other items to show up as
new the first time around instead of these?  In addition to these?

No.

However, you can 'read all' if you want to pass through all items to 
decide if you are going to forget them.

They may not be NEW, but they are UNSEEN.  Thue you can
"read unseen reverse".
