broken pipe tends to say that a connection was made then interrupted for some reason by either the remote system hanging up on the socket or the local system hanging up.. it looks like the first though here.. do you have exact session logs? They would be best placed in the garage.
Things that could cause problems:
routing problem - anywhere inbetween. Use "traceroute".
Also try connecting from different places.
IP fragmentation problem caused by incorrect configuration
of router by paranoid administrator. See RFC 1435.
incompatibility between your telnet client & grex's telnetd.
Try different telnet clients. If you recently upgraded
telnet clients, try the old version.
Some telnet clients allow you to turn on various debug options,
such as "set netdata", "set options", "set termdata".
Try recording the data and noting where it fails.
If your telnet client doesn't support such debugging,
find something that will allow you to capture packets
going between your machine & grex (ie, a network sniffer),
and see if there's something obviously wrong with what
grex is doing. If you can identify a specific part
of the telnet protocol that grex is not interpreting
right, please let grex staff know about it.
