Is it possible to set a "pointer" so that I don't have to read all the items in each conference? Having just started using grex, when joining a conference, each item is considered "new", and that is a lot of reading. thanks -mb

You can use the "fix" command, and that will set you as up to date with all the items in the conferences. You can also "forget" items and you won't see them again, and can type "read" all by itself to read new responses in items instead of getting them all.
Actually, it's not the case that every item in considered "new" when you first join a conference. Normally only the first and last items show up as new; others appear as new only when they get new responses. This is precisely to avoid the situation of being inundated with reading when you join a large conference.
Isn't it true, however, that when such items become "new" to the new conference user that *all* responses in them are new (unread) ? If so, it's overwhelming a little bit at a time... ;-)
That's right. fixseen has the same effect.

I use this "morning after" approach when an item shows up with tons of responses in it. I type q to the pager prompt, which generates a "pipe interrupt", essentially skipping all the responses. This leaves me at the respond or pass prompt (called RFP for historical reasons). Then I type "last" to see only the last response. Then if I want earlier responses I can type the response number and if not, I can pass and wait to see what conversation appears there next time. If I already know its going to be boring, I type "forget" at RFP.
