Ok: party ----- Welcome to the Silicon Cafe! Type ? for help: /var: write failed, file system is full What does this mean? I got the same message trying to type once I was in party, although it let me leave without any problems. Is this a problem with the way my account is set up, or with the party program, or what?

The /var disk partition where party writes its log files filled
up, so when party tried to append to a log file it found that
it couldn't, and printed that error message.
So it was not a problem with your account setup nor with the
party program (at least, not directly).
Somebody seems to have cleaned out the /var partition; there's
plenty of free space now.
You can see a listing of grex's disk partition usage by typing
!df
Is there a reason that a human operator is mandated?
Can't it just delete 'old', rename the new; and start the newer
log?
Actually, there's automatic rollover of log files in /var -- once a week, I believe on Sunday. So that may be exactly what happened in this case.

Ahh...so party isn't trying to kill me, some anonymous log file is trying to kill me. It all makes sense now :)
Well actually, some anonymous logfile was killing party, which then in turn was trying to kill you.
You just gotta' love a rogue log.. Hmm.. trees... Nahh
