Grex Info Item 297: Web pages on grex--how?
Entered by orinoco on Mon Dec 23 01:43:37 UTC 1996:

How does one go about getting a web page on grex? I assume it requires you
to be a member--anything else? And, other than the text-only thing, are there
any restrictions on the pages (limited #of hits/day, etc.) ?

Nope, Grex membership is not required to have a Web page here,
though it's obviously appreciated. >8)

Run the Unix command "mkhomepage" (and put a ! in front when running
from the Menu shell, the Ok: prompt, or any other non-Unix prompt)
for more info on Grex Web stuff, and to set up a www directory and
prototype page for yourself.

We don't have any fixed limit on hits per day, though we have asked
people with excessively popular pages to move them to another server,
when possible. (A policy which I still personally disapprove of,
but we can't have everything in life. >8)

Also, no CGI scripts, but you'd probably guessed that.

You can also have a look at:

        http://www.cyberspace.org/local/grex/wwwfaq.html

for answers to those questions, and many more.

I'm not fond of that policy either, fwiw. We can't really allow
one user's site to monopolize a lot our precious bandwidth,
though. I'd much sooner see us get a better link and up the limit
so it's not an issue.

We have not asked more than one or two users to find another home
for their overpopular pages. It takes about a megabyte per day to
start to be perceived as a problem for us. Most people never get
close to that.
