I'm having a huge problem in the cf system and in pine. I talked with a
"helper" and we decided that my telcom program --windows Terminal--SUCKS!
I was wondering if someone could help me come up with a solution to keep
me from having to page up and down in the cf and from getting all messed up
hitting control l in pine and loosing half the text into cybercpace!!
I'm on a VERRY tight buddget and cant aford to just go out and buy a program
at the local "puter" store. I'm not even shure what program to get even if
I could aford to. any suggestions would be appreciated as to where I could
download a good one and what a "good" one is.
Thanks
Bill

I use commo, which is dos-based, but still better than any windows-based terminal emulater I've come across. It's shareware, and registration is only $35 or $40. If you'd like, I can upload it here temporarily.

I use Windows Terminal and it works just fine for me. I used to know how to alter your problem, but I have forgotten. 8(

I agree that Windows terminal is no prize-winner, but there are a couple of things you can do to make it better-behaved: do as Valerie suggests and make sure Grex knows the correct number of rows on your screen (which is more likely 24 than 25), and make sure that the menu choice "reserve function keys for windows" (approximate wording) is UNchecked. Unfortunately the default is "checked", and it means that the codes for the arrow and other function keys don't get passed on to Grex when you strike them. I second Valerie's recommendation of MS-DOS Kermit. Latest version is 3.14, I believe--it runs fine in a DOS box in Windows and even comes with a PIF file to set that up for you. And it provides far superior terminal emulation and upload/download capability to Windows terminal..
Popcorn, thanks! It seems to be the concensis that I should take you up on your generious offer. I live in Canton (not far from A2) and could probably pick up a copy after work somday this week. Just let me know where and I could meet you someplace around 3:oo or so. wendsday would be best cause I don't have anything else to do between 3:00 and 7:30. E-me with details if it's easier for you and we can work somthoing out.

As I remember, it reserves screen space for 25 rows but uses only 24, so that the last row on the screen is always blank, but the default settings work. Very klutzy and rather confu- sing. In any case, I heartily disrecommend Windows Terminal to anyone who has any kind of reasonable alternative.
It reserves at least a row at the bottom of the screen. I think it may actually be more, but I haven't used it in a while and don't remember. That's fortunately a bug that Microsoft Telnet has gotten rid of, although it does have a lot of Windows Terminal's weirdness.
Microsoft Telnet seems pretty anemic. I'm waiting for Kermit 95 (whose release has been delayed until Oct. 23, alas).
I'm not a big fan of Microsoft Telnet either, but I use it because, of all the Windows telnet clients I've seen, it's the only one that lets me specify a host from the command line (for example, "telnet cyberspace.org" or "telnet lawtech.com"). All the others I've used have had the annoying feature whereby I would have to type "telnet" or whatever the name of the program was, watch it load, and then type in the name of the host I wanted to telnet to in some dialogue box. I guess that works well from people who load their Windows apps with a mouse, but I don't.
