(noresp doesn't work because it was a custom command on M-Net. It would
be pretty easy to write one if the f-w's wanted it.)

#2 of 55 by tsty on Mon Mar 15 06:48:30 1993:

Thankxx popcorn - is there a command to un-scribble a response, either
from the user's pov or the fw's pov?

#3 of 55 by mju on Mon Mar 15 15:15:15 1993:

Since scribble actually excises the text from the item file, I don't
think it's reversible. All the more reason to think carefully before
you scribble.

#4 of 55 by tsty on Mon Mar 15 18:18:15 1993:

adn especially before a fw scribbles - course fw (if the command works)
SHOULD personaly capture that response in a file first, just in case.

And I think that scribbled stuff +already+ goes to a file which is
readable - but the fw ought to keep a separate copy anyway, imo.

#5 of 55 by mju on Mon Mar 15 20:43:24 1993:

All expurgated and scribbled text is saved to /h1b/bbs/censored (ah,
a remnant of the old names...). That file is publically readable.
There have been large and heated debates in the past about whether
this file should be publically readable; please don't start one of them
in this item.

I also don't think that the FW can expurgate or scribble responses in
this version of PicoSpan. Only the item author and cfadm can do that.

good!

#8 of 55 by vidar on Thu May 19 23:21:16 1994:

Is there any way an FW can make an item acessable only to other FWs within
his/her conference?

Maybe, maybe not. I haven't noticed too many new users interested in this
conference.

#11 of 55 by fuz on Tue Jun 14 15:12:39 1994:

how do i change the name format in my conf? i want to use aliasses, but the
default seems to be real names.

#12 of 55 by carl on Tue Jun 14 21:18:32 1994:

Instead of entering "r" to respond, enter "pseudonym" at the
Respond or pass? prompt.

#13 of 55 by davel on Wed Jun 15 01:53:58 1994:

"pseudo" (or "ps") will give you a different name for one response. I
suspect fuz wants to assign himself, or possibly others, something
else. To do the former, the command is SET NAME - I'm not sure of the
exact syntax, but it shouldn't be too hard. As for the latter, you
probably can do it if you're the FW, but it's pretty rude to assign
names to other users without their permission.

#14 of 55 by scg on Wed Jun 15 02:04:03 1994:

Isn't it "change name", not "set name"?

#15 of 55 by omni on Wed Jun 15 03:57:20 1994:

It's SET name. I just used it.

#18 of 55 by davel on Wed Jun 15 10:04:38 1994:

The syntax, BTW, is to say SET NAME or CHANGE NAME and let it prompt you
for a replacement. Putting *that* in a script that gets run for a new
member of a conference would be fine - encouraging pseudonyms without
just up and assigning them.

#19 of 55 by tsty on Sat Jul 9 11:23:15 1994:

But it's so easy to vi the associated .cf file and alter the 2nd line,
the one which shows your current conference name, to reflect your
newer choice.

of course I like the easy way..............

I've ben trying to change the logout- and it isn't working right- what's the
exact way to do it? please help a poor new fw!!1

#21 of 55 by remmers on Wed Aug 24 20:58:38 1994:

Type "change logout" while in the conference whose logout screen you
want to change. This will bring up your usual editor, and you'll be
able to make the changes you want.

how does one unlink items? and for that matter, how does a fw of a
restarted conference archive and remove the old conference?

#27 of 55 by carson on Tue Oct 4 16:08:58 1994:

hmm... I'd like to zip the conference prior to downloading it, but
for some reason, I don't have permission to. (I *know* what the
reason is; I'm speaking in flowers. ;>)

#28 of 55 by rcurl on Tue Oct 4 18:20:44 1994:

I hadn't thought about it before, but is each conference a single file,
which is being "read" by the Picospan app, when it's in the right
directory? What is the directory?

#29 of 55 by carson on Tue Oct 4 18:55:15 1994:

the directory is /bbs/(conf name). each item is of the form _#, where
# is the item number.

#30 of 55 by carson on Tue Oct 4 18:55:56 1994:

you can also see the login, logout, bulletin (shortened to "bull"), and
some other files that I forget.

#31 of 55 by remmers on Tue Oct 4 22:35:16 1994:

In short, each conference is in its own uniquie directory, and within
that directory, each item is a separate file.

#32 of 55 by rcurl on Tue Oct 4 23:47:29 1994:

Thank you! Another window opens...

#33 of 55 by scg on Wed Oct 5 00:59:53 1994:

That confirms what I've always thought, the bulletin is a bunch of bull.

#34 of 55 by davel on Wed Oct 5 02:00:48 1994:

Presumably killing an item just does an rm system call. A file is actually
gone when all its directory entries ("links") are gone - in this case, when
it's killed from the last conference (or that conference is killed).

#36 of 55 by davel on Wed Oct 5 12:10:09 1994:

Actually, if he can copy the conference he can zip it. I have no idea what
permission he lacks (though once or twice I've noticed an *item* that wasn't
world-readable), unless he was trying to create his zip file in the
conference dir. But you can give a pathname on your zip file, & it will
put the zip file where you tell it to. Same for tar passing through
compress or whatever.

#37 of 55 by carson on Wed Oct 5 14:25:13 1994:

hmm... I'll give these a try. Thanks!

#38 of 55 by tsty on Mon Oct 10 05:43:22 1994:

Actually, in ref to #35 ... re a pass | 'cat > fylename' is a command
series which works here and elsewhere. remmers taught me that
trick a few years ago. The > fyle idea doesn't seem to want
to do what it's told .....<g>.
