Grex Info Item 247: USRobotics 9600 HST: is this just another pretty 2400 baud modem?
Entered by alan on Tue Jul 11 02:33:01 UTC 1995:

HELP! How can I connect to Grex at 9600 baud using a US Robotics Courrier
that is an older model with the HST standard and not the 9600 standard
which has been adopted today. Is there any configuration which will work?

If it really is just a HST (and not a Dual Standard), then you're
out of luck. The HST standard is sort of like Telebit's PEP: it
was pretty advanced for its time, but pretty much dropped out
of sight after V.32 and V.32bis were introduced. They were
popular for a while on FidoNet (just like Telebit PEP modems were
popular for a while with Usenet, back when most Usenet traffic
went by modem rather than the Internet), due to the heavy
discounts that USR gave to sysops who bought them. (Hmm, just
like how Telebit gave heavy discounts for UUCP nodes who bought
Trailblazers...Do you see a trend here?) Just about the only
difference is that USR wised up in time and started making modems
that use the ITU standard protocols, whereas Telebit never quite
got it through their heads that PEP's time had come and gone.
USR still makes good modems that don't cost too much; Telebit makes
good modems that cost a mint, have features few buyers want, and
are missing features that most buyers want.
