Grex Info Item 243: PPP Shoppers unite
Entered by peacefrg on Wed May 10 19:15:09 UTC 1995:

I recently lost my PPP. Is there a place to get free ppp? Or can everybody
with PPP just start giving me prices. I'm shopping around for something
I can afford again.

I think that the most affordable PPP provider around is merit. (Even
though the NSFnet is dead, merit still has some uses. <grin>). I
think that there is no time limit, you can come in at up to 19.2.
I do not think that this includes any other service (ie, popmail
server, news server (I might be wrong on this one), et. al.), but it
gives you full access to the Merit Network, which includes the ability
to go outside their network into MCIinternet (the merit backbone
provider).

From there, you can log into machines such as Grex that you can use as
a mail drop.

But then, this is just my two cents, your mileage may vary...

Yeah, I was on Northland for awhile. That's what I lost.
I need a place that is VERY cheap.

re 1:
Merit has 28.8 lines too now. The Ann Arbor one is +1 313 213-7970.

Well I'll be... How many locations have 28.8 modems? I know that the
UofM was experimenting with ISDN servers, too. Do you know if Merit
has any of those?

Re: PPP server

Then definately, if you have a v.34 modem at home, Merit is the place
to be. It would then be worthwhile to check into either a local
or a nationwide provider supplying either an IMAP or POP3 mail
presence.

No, The person who was letting me use their account couldn't afford it anymore.
So, I was without an account. But, I got on nether.net and saw
a few responses in bbs about jared putting ppp on. Does anybody
know if nether.net has ppp?

#7 of 17 by scg on Tue May 16 01:44:29 1995:

I'd be rather surprized if his contract with ICNet would allow it, but
even if he does add PPP, it's going to be slow, and you're going to have
to call Ypsilanti (just outside Ann Arbor) for it. It would be much
cheaper to use Merit or a commercial Internet provider than it would be to
call long distance from Gaylord to Ypsilanti.

(Actually, Jared has a 56k Internet connection. Not too slow . . . .)

#9 of 17 by brenda on Wed May 17 19:48:44 1995:

The last time I tried dialing into jared's, I was asked to limit
my time logged into the dailins.. You might want to keep this in mind
if you hook up there. And the 56k connection *is* fast going out.
Seems to be fairly lagged telnetting in, though.

Speaking of Jareds board, I was told you have unlimited file space.
I have hardly anything in my files and I am already getting a folder
to full error. Is my account screwy? Or was I misinformed?

Thanks Valerie. I did try on Jareds board. But it seems the place is always
empty or the people just don't like answering questions. I'll try that.

#13 of 17 by brenda on Wed May 31 17:11:03 1995:

it must be an error, peacefrg. I've got tintin++ set up there, and
no one's complained. That's in addition to a whole News dir and
everything.

#14 of 17 by remmers on Fri Jun 2 11:43:29 1995:

What's tintin++?  The ultimate newsreader?

#15 of 17 by davel on Fri Jun 2 13:28:40 1995:

Ringing of the electronic ear?

#16 of 17 by brenda on Fri Jun 2 14:02:45 1995:

Tintin++ is a dikumud client. It's pretty big. I read the rules file
yesterday to make sure.. Jared asks that everyone keep his du to under
3 Megs. If you need more, you're supposed to ask him and if it's ok,
he'll move your stuff to a disk with more room on it.

I thought tintin++ was a programming language used by cartoon
characters with enormous cowlicks... >8)
