Grex Info Item 238: .jpg's
Entered by tas on Tue Apr 25 20:42:57 UTC 1995:

I'm looking for a .jpg viewer for DOS. Does anyone know where I can find
a good shareware viewer?

Also, I use msu-gopher to read usenet. Is there any way to either view
the pictures, download them and view them somehow or anything?

If anyone can help, thanks in advance.

Get Photoshop Pro. It's everywhere in anonymous ftps.
One of the best graphics programs I have ever worked with.
I would compare it to Corel Draw (no joke) It won Best Shareware product
for 1993 and 1994. If you want I can get you the ftp where you can get it.
Also, winjpeg is slow but ok and lviewpro is a nice program. All of these
are ftp abled.

And to get things off of the gophers, (i assume you don't have PPP) you have to
mail them to yourself and then download them. Then you are going to need
a program called wincode.zip or uudecode.exe - Both of these will decode
the text into pictures. wincode is a nice Windows front-end for uudecode.
But if you are a DOShead, then uudecode is nice. Multiple
postings are a whole differant story though.

I got one called paintshop pro. I'm really impressed with it so far.
I also got one that's just a viewer called cview 386.. I would
recommend this one too. I didn't understand what you mean about mailing
them to myself. I was able to download a couple pictures from usenet,
but the format is the name of the group. Do I just edit out the header
and anything else *written* there, then run uudecode on it?

Yes, delete it on the header up to

begin <filename>.jpg

then uudecode it. But, if you get wincode, you don't need to strip the header.
It automatically does it. And you can run multiple files through wincode
and it automatically recognizes the header and 2/3 files.
I didn't like cview too much. I like lviewpro a lot though.
But nothing stands up to Photoshop.
What I am looking for is a program that will index all of the pictures
on a disk into one .jpg or .gif
so that I have an index of my collections.
Anybody know of some software that will do that?

Nephi, what kinds of pics are you looking for? E-mail me...I trade
pics on irc so I have A LOT of them. I'll see what I can do for you.

What FTP address can I use to get the viewers? What are the names
of the viewers as listed there. Which ones are best for Windows?

#9 of 17 by peacefrg on Thu May 4 05:38:48 1995:

Beest program I have found for windows is psp30.zip
I think that that was the zipped up version. I have the Photo shop web page.
I'll check for the address. I downloaded it off of there.
There is a new version out now. You can get it off of the webpage as well.

Also, winjpeg.zip (slow, but workable) and winmorph.zip (Good windows morph
program)

Where do I get the "unzipper" for Windows? (Gee, I hope *that's* not
zipped up!)

#11 of 17 by remmers on Thu May 4 10:19:51 1995:

Ftp site ftp.cica.indiana.edu has a very comprehensive windows software
archive. (It's also very busy, but there are mirror sites.) Standard
stuff like "winzip" -- a Windows zip/unzip program -- can be found there.

#12 of 17 by peacefrg on Thu May 4 15:21:55 1995:

Yeah, get winzip.zip nephi. Yopu don't get any better.
But if you can't just get pkunzip. It's dos but nice.

#13 of 17 by brenda on Thu May 4 17:04:43 1995:

If anyone wants pkunzip, e-mail me. I'd be glad to upload it and mail
it to you.

Re #12: I don't think he really wants winzip.ZIP.
