I am not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but I have a question. When I log on, I get all kinds of heiroglyphics on the screen and various forms of the request to logon. Usually it is a sidways triangle after the logon prompt. (fully filled in triangle, not hollow). If I enter my logon, it does not recognize it, but if I erase the triangle, I can get on. Then, as I type various messages, either in pine, or in the various conferences, I get a lot of phantom characters as I type. Also, during e-mail transmissions, I get phantom commands, such as "Do you really want to delete?" etc. I am never sure the mail goes out unless I get a return note. Any general advice? Is it my set-up or noisy lines, or ??? Thanks

Sounds like general line noise to me, I've gotten things like that before, I've gotten things worse than that.
Is your modem set up for MNP error correction? If so, try disabling it; attempts to initiate it are likely to be taken as input by Grex. (But this commonly presents more serious problems than you describe - such as complete inability to connect - so it's not all that likely. Just a top- of-my-head suggestion.) Info is a good place for questions like this.
Rob slipped in. The reason I'd question general line noise is that (if I understand) the symptoms at connection sound consistent. The later stuff does sound like line noise.
At the time mcpoz got the odd characters, his terminal was set to ANSI, while his .profile specifies VT-100. Would this cause the problem? (I suggested to him it might.)

thanks - I am making headway. Perhaps I had 2 problems; line noise & error correction. It looks pretty solid now after I am logged on. Funny thing, though, every time I log on, I get "password incorrect" the first time, but it takes the second time. I tend to type slopily but I have been making sure it is ok, still getting the incorrect message. Oh, well, thanks again.

After turning it off, it remains at login, but appears to be ok after that.
