Tell us what that UOM student sees while logging into their account, and we could give more specific answers. What Valerie says goes in general, but there are systems at UOM not yet on the net, and other strange things (like, PCs!).
I have no idea what the student sees, and there are many students. And,
Valerie, what prompt does the student type the "telnet cyberspace.org"
at? I need specific, detailes instructions for people who don't know
anything about the computer systems at U-M.
Pattie
For all those that use the ITD, CAEN, or several other Mac-based nets at UOM, they have a "home directory" on some machine, with its own name. The prompts are multitudinous, but may be things like dow3%, or purple% (whole groups of servers have names of colors, or birds, or other categories). This is equivalent to the home directory prompt on grex, for uses of unix shells (csh, tcsh, etc). At *that* prompt, one enters telnet cyberspace.org
The thing to keep in mind about the U o fM is that there is no one piece of software that everybody uses. It does not matter whether somebody is student, aculty, staff, or whatever. Everybody there has the options of using the Unix machines, using MTS, using Merit, running PPP off of their own computers, and any number of other things. It is the PPP option that is being pushed right now, I think, and that is where there is the most variability. With that, people can run whatever telnet software they want, and there are a lot of differences between different pieces of telnet software. It doesn't do much good to come in here asking, "how does a UM student connect to Grex," and wanting instructions for each specific piece of software. It probably makes most sense to tell them to telnet to cyberspace.org the same way they would telnet to anywhere else, and to ask somebody or check the manual for their software if they can't figure it out.

OK... how about going from the CONFER prompt then? People seem to know
how to get there.
Pattie
Sorry - can't go anywhere from confer%, except to conferences, or out. However, they *got* to CONFER by telnetting there, so instead of telnetting to confer.itd.umich.edu, just telnet to cyberspace.org.

this is the text I sent by way of help.
Chatting on the Rialto
The subject of setting up a *confer* (message conference on the U-M
computer systems) came up recently in the Shire's mailing list, as
well as the last Shire Council. While a resolution passed to set up such
a place for students to chat together about the SCA, I mentioned that
such a system existed already--a local Rialto here in our Shire. People
were interested in accessing this system (called Grex), so here are some
directions. Once on Grex, you want to access the BBS and join the Rialto
conference and join the fun!
A Note before we get started: I'm told there are quite a number of
different systems at the U-M, so I can't be specific for every case.
What I'm trying to do is give general guidelines to help people find
their way to Grex.
The easiest way to access Grex is to use your computer and modem to call
(313) 761-3000. The rest of the ways are assuming you have access to
either a U-M system or a system called MichNet or Merit, that unites the
Michigan universities' computer systems together.
You know you're at a Michnet/Merit prompt when you get a
Which Host? prompt
You want to type telnet cyberspace.org
Michnet/Merit then says something like "You need to enter authorization
to do this. What is your authorization?" Students would type in their
authorization as their account name.
accountname@umich.edu
Then Grex says:
Grex is the breakfast food of champions.
login:
UM-GOMLINK Users
For those of you with access to UM-GOMLINK, try this: The first screen
will give you 5 options.
Type 5 (Connect to MLINK).
The first option will be "Search mlink (bla...bla..)
Choose that line. String to search?
Type GREX
GREX at cyberspace.org will be the next option. Hit the ENTER key, and
you're in!
For those of you who know how to get to confer% on the U-M system, I'm
told that you get there by telnetting, so instead of telnetting to
confer.itd.umich.edu, just telnet to cyberspace.org. This will get you
the Grex login prompt.
I have no experience with the computers at U-M, so if these directions
do not help, ask people who staff the computer area you're using. I'm
sure they'll be able to tell you out to get out from where you are.
"See" ya online. <grin>

Is ITD referring to uniqnames as "accountnames" now? I have several accountnames, but not all of them are my uniqname, which is what I need to authorize to the NAS and the WH? prompt.

Hey, most people at UM stumble over this issue of names and accounts. Best to be clear.
Thanks Valerie! <grin> Thanks for the help, folks!
Pattie
I'm fairly sure it is still uniqnames, and not accountnames, but hopefully people will be able to figure it out. Other than that, the instructions looked good to me.
We'll see: the proof is in the pudding when new people show up for the
Rialto conference! (fingers crossed)
Pattie
For what it counts, it's definitely uniqnames not accountnames.
