I've been trying unsuccessfully to reach someone by e-mail. I'm going to try to get a message to them via an intermediary. In case their sysstem has as much trouble finding Grex as I've had reaching them, I want to send him Grex's numerical e-mail address. Does anyone know this numberical address for Grex?

Mail with a numeric address *might* work. It's in the standard. But until recently, few mailers actually supported it. So it's very iffy. One thing to keep in mind is, those numeric addresses aren't as likely to be long lived as the host name. It's quite possible grex could have a different IP address a year or so from now - or that mail might be handled with a different yet IP address. The english name.domain string is much more likely to keep on working.
The only reason I want to use numerical is that the english name.domain couldn't rea the destination for two diff. addresses in Canada (ending in .CA). From my understanding different mail handlers have different english name lists, and they're incomplete. Supposedly the numerical addresses are absolute and not in need of interpretation, therefore dead-sure. I could see how they could be in a way relative and changable, but my need is only temporary.
Another way to find the numeric address of anywhere is nsquery (name@address) It should output the numeric equivalent.

Query? is the um-dns host prompt. Enter um-dns at the Which Host? prompt on MichNet (which you can get by telnetting to hermes.merit.edu or dialing up a MichNet SCP).
You can also telnet to runningman.rs.itd.umich.edu on port 5432.
Yet another way is to run "nslookup" right here on grex, then just type the host name in at the ">" prompt.
is the database here, or will nslookup go offsite as needed?

DNS is distributed. It's everywhere, and nowhere.
Cool! It works on my Linux box too.
Re #114: Though if it uses tcp, I presume it works for members only.
(Make that #14, not #114.)
thankxx mdw, confirmed my thought.
