Grex Info Item 197: Posting to Usenet news even tho we don't receive it now.
Entered by chi1taxi on Wed Jan 4 02:25:54 UTC 1995:

It has been mentioned that even though we can't get usnet news right now,
there may be some way to post to it. Anyone know how this can be done?

Yes, and the answer is in this Fall's e-mail Internet seminar that
rcurl (I think) stashed somewhere on line.

Where, because this is a question I've had too. I can read news from
launchpad but I don't have posting abilities. I'd like a way to post

Read /roadmap/roadmap.intro and go from there.

Rane, I read /rm/rm.14, the one about usenet news, and there was no
instruction for posting. I'm sure .14 is the pertinent rm, do you have
any other suggestions?

somewhere else i said this ... email is +supposed+ to
work, but i haven't seen proof-positive yet. However, the
email didn't bounce (???)

email to <name.of.newsgroup>.usenet@decwrl.dec.com is
supposed to be the incantation.

Thanks tsty, I'll try it.

Re 5: I have read postings that came through mail->unenet gateways.
I don't know about the one TS mentioned.

I sent mail to misc.test.usenet@decwrl.dec.com, and have already
gotten nine responses from the automatic reply servers around
the world. Looks like it works!

I tried posting to couple newsgroups using the group.usenet@blah.blah
and they ALL bounced. Are there any other addresses for posting
using e-mail?

Does anyone know any other way to post?

Yes, it was. Here's a list I got from peacefrg for still-valid
mail-to-News gateways, haven't had a chance to test them yet:

      group.name@news.demon.co.uk
      group.name@dispatch.demon.co.uk
      group.name@bull.com
      group.name@cass.ma02.bull.com
      group.name@charm.magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu
      group.name@paris.ics.uci.edu
      group.name@news.alias.net
      group.name@crs4gw.crs4.it
      group.name@berlioz.crs4.it
      group.name.usenet@canaima.Berkeley.EDU
      group.name.usenet@hkucs92.air.org
(For an updated list send e-mail to mg5n+remailers@andrew.cmu.edu)

Robert.

Thanks alot for posting the info about mail-to-Usenet servers.

It was extremely helpful.

#13 of 16 by use on Sun Apr 8 02:50:54 2001:

I tried most of the servers Listed by robert.

When I put them in the 'TO' adress field, the response was either
'host unknown' or 'user unknown.'

When I tried them in the newsgroup field(in PINE) the system
responded with 'newsserver not defined.'

#14 of 16 by use on Sun Apr 8 03:08:45 2001:

Just after posting the previous message I got an email from an
autoresponder that my message was posted to their newsserver
in the alt.test newsgroup.

The message said that the email was sent to

alt.test@paris.ics.uci.edu

So it seems that that newsserver is working.

If I get any other positive responses, I'll post about it.

Well, the most recent posting before yours was 1995, so it makes sense that
some servers no longer exist.

#16 of 16 by use on Mon Apr 9 23:29:51 2001:

If somebody has an updated list of servers or knows where to get one,
please post.

(Davel, you're right. I didn't notice how old that post was.)
