Does any one have any info on ?hop? or something like that? It goes out and pings and lists all the spots it hits along the way. My apologies for my UNIX ignorance.

The program you're looking for is "traceroute". It's installed here on Grex in /usr/local/etc, but for some reason is permitted such that only staff can use it.
I believe steve explained this a while ago - traceroute is a very link-intensive program, and if everyone used it, our link's peformance would be sloooooooooooooooooooooow.
That's interesting. As far as I know, traceroute isn't any more bandwidth-intensive than "ping" is.
I don't know why it's permitted the way it is either, but I do know while it doesn't exercise the system all that much, it *does* do a number on the name server, which isn't as stable as it should be in the first place.
