Grex Info Item 141: Possible to avoid ttyh2?
Entered by cicero on Tue Apr 19 06:32:38 UTC 1994:

Is there a way to avoid getting ttyh2 when dialing in? The line noise
is just getting too bad! I think somone once mentioned calling the number
for ttyh3 or something like that to leave it out of the hunt pattern.

here's an idea... we'll only allow vidar to login on ttyh2, and make that
the only line available to him. he can sit there for hours at a time
backspacing the noise and unable to ramble and such.

Now, now.
Anyway, it wouldn't work. I've been in on ttyh2 several times lately with
minimal or no noise.
Possibly because it's been so noisy just before that people have hung up.

See the command !phones

When I don't want to get ttyh2, I dial 761-3554.

carson, you sure have evil thoughts. Are you aware, that not everything I
say is rambling? I try to confine rambling to the items where it is
designated.

(try harder)

Would it be possible to reconfigure the phone lines such that ttyh2 is
last in the hunt?

#7 of 18 by remmers on Wed Apr 20 03:33:45 1994:

With our current phone service, as I understand it, the phone company
would have to do that -- we couldn't do it ourselves. When we move
to Centrex service, we'll have the ability to reconfigure the hunt
sequence any way we want.

also, when we move, as I understand it, the problems with ttyh2 will
disappear. If only someone else would disappear that easily...

#9 of 18 by davel on Wed Apr 20 09:56:16 1994:

That's assuming the problem is with the phone line and not with cabling or
other parts of our hardware. This is very likely but as far as I know not
certainly established.

carson, for someone who's trying NOT to act like me, you're doing an
amazingly poor job.

I am on ttyh2 right now. There is very minimal line noise at the moment.

#13 of 18 by anne on Sat Apr 23 03:03:09 1994:

Sometimes there is very minimal line noise, other times you can be typing
along and every time you type a character line noise throws three out!
I can start out fine on tthy2, but then five minutes in I start to get a
little line noise, then slowly the ammount builds up until it hits my
interupt key, and I'm history!

#14 of 18 by vidar on Sat Apr 23 12:57:32 1994:

Took half an hour for me to get line noise last night.

#15 of 18 by anne on Sat Apr 23 16:36:40 1994:

took me five minutes this morning, but right now it is fine. Just depends.

#16 of 18 by vidar on Sat Apr 23 21:29:09 1994:

Let's just *CANE* the line, and hope it behaves from then on!

I don't know about you, but my program has a specific way of warning me that
I've been connected on ttyh2.

Then normal stuff shows up, but before "CONNECT 2400" which appears right
in front of the "grex login:" prompt. The program also does not automatic-
ally shut of the count down when I connect to ttyh2.
