Grex Inbetween Item 8: Halloween, then and now
Entered by scg on Mon Oct 31 04:57:19 UTC 1994:

With Halloween coming up tomorrow, I've been thinking back on past
Halloweens. I remember how it used to be such a big deal. I would have
so much fun running around in costumes and stuffing myself with candy. It
was a day I looked forward to for a long time, and would be very
disappointed when it was over.
Now that I've gotten older, that seems to have changed a bit.
For one thing, I no longer eat candy very much, and the prospect of
having a while bag of candy brings to mind more of a "what do I do with
this" type feeling than a feeling of joy. Also, running around the
neighborhood in a costume, although it does seem like it would still be
fun, just doesn't have the same allure it once did. Instead, I will
probably spend this Halloween handing out candy to whavever trick or
treaters come to my house and having lots of fun admiring their costumes.
Somehow, it won't be the sameas it used to be, but maybe Halloween is just
one of those times when it would be nicer not to have grown up. :)
How has Halloween changed for you over the years? Do you do
things differently now than you used to? Is it more enjoyable or less
enjoyable? Or is Halloween just some satanic or pagan ritual that must be
stopped at any cost?

i don't think that it should be stopped...but yes, there are some rituals
involved...:)

i want to go trick-or treating, but i thinjk that i am geting too old.
i remember how mad i used to get to see the older kids go, so i think i will
abstain tonight from the festivities. of course, the fact that i'm supposed
to work helps.

Hallowen was originally a pgan ritual, and for some of us... it still is.
Last night the pagan group I am in did a ritual for halloween. I think that
a number of people forget what it is supposed to be about. There is more to
it then kids running around getting candy.

#3 of 32 by spyder on Tue Nov 1 06:17:06 1994:

well .......I have no clue what it is supposed to be about ...but all i know is
I went to a haunted house with a girl ...boy was she scard crap-less...and was
given a peice of candy in a class today..and was wished happy Halloween once.
so I think I'm not alone in the crowd of people who do not know what it is all
about.

so tell us......anne "WHAT IS THE SPIRT OF HALLOWEEN"

Happy Pumpkin Toys and a dead leaf.

#5 of 32 by anne on Thu Nov 3 02:09:37 1994:

It's a lot more then that. But since the system is going down... I'll
s'plain later...

#6 of 32 by gerund on Thu Nov 3 11:10:58 1994:

Yeah, it is, and incidently i spent about five full screens explaining
what it was to ME, but the system crashed while i was typing that in.
I'm not going to rehash it. Suffice it to say that, for me, there
is no time of year beyond or above fall, and no time in fall beyond or
above Halloween. I'd elaborate, but somehow I don't think it'd be
clear.

#7 of 32 by carson on Thu Nov 3 11:44:48 1994:

that much wasn't clear...

#8 of 32 by anne on Thu Nov 3 17:39:36 1994:

Halloween- originally - All Hollow's Eve, or Samhain to the pagans in the
crowd, is a time to honor and celebrate the dead. To thank the earth for
the summer's bounty, and prepare for the upcoming winter. Children dressed
up because their parents were protecting them. They believed that elves
would come and kidnap their children, becuse the elveschildren were hideous
and the human babies were perfect. By dressing the children up, the elves
thought they were their children, and didn't take them. (that's why kids
nowadays dress up)
This is a time for reflection, and introspection. To examine what has
happened, and what needs to be changed. This is the spirit of Halloween,
at least to me.

#9 of 32 by gerund on Fri Nov 4 01:54:32 1994:

Close enough for me, sorta.
Except it goes a bit beyond just death, but anyhow...
I can't say any more.

#10 of 32 by anne on Fri Nov 4 04:36:38 1994:

I don't understand what you mean by going beyond just death... could you
try to explain more, gerund, or maybe mail me?

#11 of 32 by carson on Fri Nov 4 09:39:51 1994:

Halloween isn't a religious experience for me. For the first few years
of my life, it was a chance to escape my identity and become something
else, if only for a day. After my parents divorced, my mother turned
into a faux-zealot and wouldn't let me go trick-or-treating anymore. I
have grown to not miss it, although I still get annoyed when some of
my friends insist upon dressing up and going out to beg for candy. I
mean, grow up, "put aside childish things", and all that. I guess
that Halloween is a part of childhood for many, and that its death as
a childhood thing is something that is dealt with differently by each
individual.

#12 of 32 by gerund on Fri Nov 4 11:48:41 1994:

I mean that Halloween 'traditionally' signifies change for me. Not solely
death. I also mean it signifies a lot of negative things, but beyond those
negative things it signifies possitive things. Perhaps this IS better
rambled about in mail. I don't feel I'd do any better with it though.
sorry

#13 of 32 by anne on Tue Nov 8 01:42:56 1994:

that's what halloween is, a time of change... I'm sorry if I wasn't clear
on that. change isn't necesarily good or bad, it just is.

#14 of 32 by gerund on Tue Nov 8 02:04:29 1994:

yeah... it just IS
how come some people see that sometimes, but not other times?

#15 of 32 by anne on Wed Nov 9 15:33:02 1994:

Cause some times they are looking, other times they don't want to see.

#16 of 32 by gerund on Wed Nov 9 22:54:12 1994:

yeah

#17 of 32 by spyder on Thu Nov 10 01:14:11 1994:

#26 of 32 by flem on Sun Dec 11 01:51:45 1994:

Spider Robinson is one of the people who best understands humanity and
the way humanity should (not necessarily do) interact that I have ever
come into contact with. His _Stardance_, written with his wife, is a
classic, and my copy is currently at scg's house (a fact I am not happy
about.). Also, _Callahan's Crosstime Saloon_ should be read by anyone
seeking to be a more understanding, sensitive person.

#27 of 32 by anne on Sun Dec 11 04:12:31 1994:

I read that Saloon one! Or one in the world... It was, interesting!

#28 of 32 by spyder on Tue Dec 13 04:02:50 1994:

thanks I'll look them up tonight

#29 of 32 by face on Sun Dec 25 00:08:08 1994:

My dad had a friend when I was young that was very tall and lanky whom she
er...he called, spider.

#30 of 32 by abchan on Wed Oct 4 23:56:35 1995:

Geez, it's almost Halloween again!

#31 of 32 by eskarina on Wed Oct 9 20:53:45 1996:

And again! I have a couple of friends who are seniors in high school now and
have never stopped having Halloween fun... not necessarily dressing up and
begging. they like to scare the kids who come around, so they go over to the
ones house that gets more trick or treaters and have fun... I 'm thinking of
joining them this year.

What are you going to be for halloween?

#32 of 32 by abchan on Sat Oct 12 14:10:58 1996:

<abchan is too broke to afford any costumes and wonders what's the strangest
thing she could pull together with what she already has>
