OK, so the main curiousity for me is earrings. What (if anything) are the rules or conventions? I vaguely recall something from the 70's about left vs. right indicating gay vs. straight, but it looks like about anything is fair game nowadays (both ears, etc.). How about ear cuffs? Anything there? It'll probably be a long time until I get around to having holes poked in my lobes. And whatever happened to gold chains in the chest hair framed by a disco shirt open to the waist? OK, Lenny Kravitz does it that way...

I guess I should mention that I'm pretty curious about how things like this "work" in the subculture sense. What are the origins, etc? Where will it lead?
I can remember the not-so-good-old days of the 1950's and 1960's where it was proper only for women to wear earrings, and only on the ears. Today, there are few places of the body which have been pierced on at least one person (and that even includes the more personal body parts).

Ears don't matter anymore...right or left or both is becoming the cultural norm for men and women.
Just for the record, I have both ears pierced....I never really cared too much for the stereotypical views of others... RE#1: Scott I do know that from an origins pont of view that Earrings were worn in Biblical times as a sign of slavery or servitude. A slave would have his era pierced to show loyalty or ownership by a certain master.

Funny you should bring this up now. The owner of my company is on an image kick, and has just banned the wearing of earrings by all male personnel. This affects three of my six mechanics. And just to be a pain, he says that earrings on females cannot hang below the earlobe, and cited safety as the reason. Personally, earrings on men fall into the "whatever" category. If you like 'em, wear 'em, in any number or combination that suits your taste.
If your face is close enough to a fan belt for your *earring* to catch on, then your nose and cheeks would be gone already. Hmmph. Is this Dewey or the neat owner who sends you to camp each summer? ;-)
It's the owner. Dewey is a bit soft in the spine to try anything like this. I'm waiting for a "hair above the collar" edict, which, if he's serious, is the next logical step. A question to the married gentlemen: do you have a wedding band, and when/why would you *not* wear it?
Otter -- if he did a hair above the collar thing, would you have to cut yours or just wear it in a ponytail?
I'm sure that my hair, as anyone's, would have to be worn in such a way that it would not hang below collar level. For me, that would mean wearing it in a knot. No big deal, and it does make sense in a shop. The only bummer would be figuring out what to do with my Braid, though I could probably find a way to pin it back. <segue back to topic> I'm sure I could come up with some spiffy hair jewelry. . .
There si only one time in the nine years that I have been married that I didnt have onn my wedding ring....I had taken it in to get it resized, and the jewelr had to send it out.....The delivery company guy stole all the merchandise.....ughhhh...That just about killed my wife and I. The Jewelr of course replaced it, but it just wasnt the same....Anyway that is the only time my wedding band has ever been off....
sad, but life goes on.
