*What do you do for a living?* I am always facinated by what others do for a living. I thought we could share our careers, occupations, or even our future career goals here. Since I entered this item I will start by saying that I have worked in the Corrugated Container Industry for about 7 years now.. How exciting!!!!! It is really quite simple I take sheets of corrugated board put them through a press print, slot, glue, and fold them. All automated of course. I am presently trying to get myself into our companies M.I.S. dept. We have quite a complex computer system in our plant. So anyways there it is....Who's next?

MIS = Manufacturing Information Systems?
You are correct Sir!!!!!
Might be a lot of us in that field... I do warehouse/shipping software.
I work in Fuel Delivery Engineering. That's the design of Fuel Pumps & Senders. Re: #1 - Dan does your job involve the use of data to interact real time with manufacturing processes? Also, I may have the need to buy quantities of corrugated shipping cartons. Does your firm sell custom printed boxes?
At the present time I do not work with the mis dept. if that is what you are asking...We do use S.P.C. to chart the quality flow of our processes... We can pretty much make and print any type or kind of box you want... Bay Corrugated Container...Monroe, MI. I am just a grunt on the floor right now....
Ok & thanks. I used to be heavily involved in SPC - pretty interesting stuff!
I teach computer science at the university level. (EMU)
Spc is Ok....but we are beginning to make the transition to I.S.O. 9000 Which means more school...I dont mind though, any free training I get is good for me.... What do you mean by computer science John? Is it like programming?
Computer science is the study of computers and computer systems. Programming is a big part of it, but the subject also includes such things as computer architecture, design of operating systems, networks, real-time systems, artificial intelligence, database design and implementation, robotics, design of programming languages, and the mathematical foundations underlying it all.
That is quite a field your in John...You must have a pretty good handle on the things that go on around here hen huh?
Yes, and I could destroy the whole system with less than 10 keystrokes.
Such power, iron John. You and Donald Trump.
Nope, The Donald doesn't have root access on this machine. Then of course, most DOS/Windows people can destroy their own system with less than 10 keystrokes...
And most of those people could destroy their system and not even know ho w they did it...
uh i work in a small public library..i am an interlibrary loan person. I don't know what this says about me but when I took it over in sept of last year we had a total of 400 request for the whole year by December. Today we had 866 requests for books from other libraries. I love reference and research. The thrill of finding what a patron asks for is very wonderful. plus I am learning computer stuff. This is the first job I actually love very much. And i love the patrons so much i am a hugger so...some of the patrons get hugs if they want one..or pats on the hand or arm and teasing and love. *smile*..Thanks for letting me tell my job to you...:)
And welcome to Homme, linda... :) I've worked in a library, though not ILL... Gov't docs, actually.
You know Brighn, you always have struck me as the librarian type.... hehe
And what is that supposed to mean, Dan? I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing for a living in a month... right now I'm teaching but that ends next week.
It was a Joke Brighn...... What are you teaching?
I know it was a joke, I'm just wondering... I was amused, actually. Lingusitics, english as a Second Language, and Frosh Comp
Maybe I am ignorant or somethin...What is "Frosh"?
Frosh = Freshman
Gawd I am ignorant.......ughhhhhhh
This seems to be a dead subject area so let's see if a little fresh input can get some more responses here, or maybe the others who visit "Homme" don't have an occupation to refer to.I am presently in between occupations at the moment, but I do start at a new position on the 8th. I spent 6yrs in the Army working in the telecommunications arena, a few years in Frankfurt, GE.(sort of like AT&T for the U.S. Govt.) I worked by Dan's(bubu) side in the "box factory" for four months,heard about the govt. taking down the barriers on the communications industry, and decided to see if my experiences might transfer to the cable arena,BINGO transfering of 1's and 0's are pretty much the same just different information packaged within it. That's it for me...
No WRONG...You worked for me..
I co-manage a Midas franchise in Kalamazoo. I handle the people and paper, my partner does the hands-on car stuff. (I ran the store as a sole manager 3 years ago but left to relocate in scenic Gaylord.) BTW, I *am* a certified mechanic with excellent diagnostic skills. Why is it that most male customers seem to have a problem believing that I know what I'm talking about? Is it that cars are a "manly" thing? Or is it that I'm not supposed to be able to grow brains and these <otter points to her ample bosom> too?
I don't know Otter? I know I don't have a problem with it..I think though it will still take time for men (in general) to accept women in work roles that have typically only been filled by men...It is a growing process for the entire Gender...
I believe you hit the nail on the head otter, many people (even some females) believe that somethings are reserved for the mechanical abilities of men, until they encounter a female who proves otherwise. I can relate to you from my experiences in the Army. Fresh out of technical school, and a young private senior people didn"t believe that I could solve more complex technical problems,because of my inexperience. Eventually I proved myself, but many people looked right through me until that time. Another thought, the norm can say that everyone is equal, but it can't make people believe it (ex. Emancipation Proclamation)
I'm a librarian at the Free University in Amsterdam Holland at the Justice/Economics library. A fairly nice job that, though doesn't pay too well. But as long as I go whistling to work it sure weighs the pay. I'd rather be a civil servant than a ratracer. Currently I'm in charge of the Justice department, which means I can bully ten people around (haha).
Do you have to be quiet all the time.. I thought this would be a good place to say I am moving to a different position with my company. I will be going to a supervisors position within the next coupole of weeks... The new job will afford me new responsibilities..including an entire department of employees..along with a wagee increase of about $16,000 a year... <Woo-Hoo>
Now, that's what I'm talking about. My wage increase can be measured in 300 Dollars a year.

Five-figure raises are not a common thing in most fields, and something to be pleased with. (I actually managed one a little while back.) I muck about with computers and things for a living; my title is "Software Engineer" whatever that means. I most act as the guy who knows about cryptographic methods and security modeling. Hardly an exotic profession, particularly out here in Seattle. It's a fun job and a great place to do it (Seattle, I mean. My current employer... arguable. ;-)
(You can always jump ship and go over to Microsoft. It's just down the road apiece.)
I work at K-Byte/Reptron Electronics in Gaylord. (There's a plant in Saline, too). We assemble and test circuit boards for ATM machines, amps, gas pump displays, etc, etc. My main job is to assemble, but I Q.A. quite a bit too. QA's look over the board and make sure that the parts are correctly installed. It's a fairly boring job (lots of repetition), but my walkman and the company of people who know lots of jokes helps. I work the night shift, which is why I grex during the day. <birdy is NOT a morning person>
Huh-oh..a QA person...SPC, ISO 9000 and all that... I am currently doing my new job after receiving my weeks training..It is not too bad..I basically run a department within our company and am responsible for the function of all its machinery and personel...that totals about 8 machines and 21 employees...I will say with all the activity( I walk alot on this job) I lost about 5 pounds last week..My old job just entailed standing and pushing buttons and computer keys...
(Yes, I interviewed there a while back but ended up turning them down. There are also literally hundreds of other places around. I love this place. :-)
(So Seattle is the Silicon Harbor?)
(Never heard it called that, but probably the SF Bay area is the only place with more cool opportunities.)
