Grex Homme Item 31: What are your priorities in life?
Entered by mcpoz on Sat Oct 14 11:55:53 UTC 1995:

What are your priorities in life? A good friend of mine volunteered that
hunting (guns) was his highest priority. This astounded me and upon further
questioning, he put the top three in order:
      #1. Hunting & guns
      #2. Job
      #3. Family
I told him I couldn't believe he was serious, and he told me he was absolutely
serious. I had never put things in priority order before, but to me it was
obvious that #1 was family, #2 (probably) was job and #3 was ????.

I have other friends, who I would guess that would say #1 is golf, however
I have not asked them.

(Oh yes, the friend whose top priority was hunting & guns was married and had
children).

It probably is healthy to think about the general order of one's priorities.
 How do yours stack up?

#1. Family
#2. Cyberfamily
#3. Friends
#4. Work

#1. Wife
#2. Children
#3. Friends(including cyberfriends)
#4. Work

I know of some people who have their priorities messed up. I would think
though that this is just a small percentage of the population.
(At least I would hope so)

<pssst!... what is 'cyberfamily?>

#6 of 47 by bubu on Tue Oct 24 15:31:27 1995:

You Know, Your cyber-wife, cyber-husband, cyber-kids, and the adorable
cyber-dog! <bubu is feeling sarcastic this morning>

#7 of 47 by katie on Tue Oct 24 17:56:53 1995:

I find that somewhat sad.

#8 of 47 by brighn on Tue Oct 24 19:19:40 1995:

Sorry to hear that, Katie.
Haven't we been through this elsewhere?

#9 of 47 by katie on Wed Oct 25 12:57:03 1995:

Probably.

#10 of 47 by brighn on Wed Oct 25 16:52:27 1995:

Responded to with your typical loquaciousness, Katie. You should be a
politician; there
erp there'd be a Hell of a lot less filibustering and a lot more
productivity. *grin*
(That *was* meant as a compliment, btw.)

#11 of 47 by bubu on Wed Oct 25 21:10:37 1995:

I dont think there is anything wrong with considering close friends as family,
even if you only know them as a login on a pc.

#12 of 47 by katie on Sat Oct 28 14:23:48 1995:

I don't think so, either.

#13 of 47 by bubu on Thu Mar 28 23:42:35 1996:

I put together a little survey....it is fairly simple but may give us some
idea about the priorities about people.
I will try to post it in agora to get a wide cross section of responses..
I will try to post results here...
type /u/bubu/survey

#14 of 47 by bubu on Sun Mar 31 20:52:39 1996:

Well so far the most responses have come for the Family..This is good to see.
Here is the tally so far:
Family: 6
Friends: 4
Job: 0
Money: 0
Self: 3

This is really encouraging...

#20 of 47 by clees on Fri Apr 19 15:02:21 1996:

Priorities in life:
1. Friends (girlfriends included)
2. My twinbrother (family)
3. Respecting each other
4. Without 3 love cannot exist, love
5. Job
6. Travelling
7. All of the above together would make me really happy.

#21 of 47 by bubu on Fri Apr 19 20:11:41 1996:

So many people do not realize that love cannot exist without respect first...
Looks to me like you have things in order...
I need to check my survey and find out how things are going...post in a bit!

#22 of 47 by marcvh on Thu May 23 21:12:00 1996:

Some of these things are a bit unclear, though. Does "job" mean that
your priority is "keeping your boss happy" or "not getting fired" or
"a job that is interesting and challenging" or "money from my job" or
what?

3. Career
2. Immediate family (i.e. wife, pets)
1. Regular trips to the bathroom (I mean, I can go on a trip and not
see my wife for a few days, but can't do without this one...)

#23 of 47 by mcpoz on Fri May 24 00:59:01 1996:

Probably if someone lists "job" or "work" they are referring to the sense of
accomplishment (Maslow's 'self actualization') they get from whatever it is
that they do.

#24 of 47 by yo on Sat May 25 14:02:22 1996:

1) a social life
2)Friends (this is diff from 1)
3)school
4)family
5)friends (very important)
6) Work (its damm hard to work the rest in with this one)

#25 of 47 by bubu on Sat May 25 15:04:01 1996:

I would like to encourage anyone new to this cf to use my survey program for
this item...I would like to get a few more responses before I kill the
program.
just type at the OK: prompt...!/u/bubu/survey
or at any shell prompt just type ..../u/bubu/survey...

#26 of 47 by scott on Sat May 25 16:33:10 1996:

Last time I ran the survey, it gave me only *one* choice, no way to add
comments... Damn hard to put down one top priority without it sounding like
your overriding goal in life.

#27 of 47 by beeswing on Sat May 25 20:53:54 1996:

True. I forgot what I put, but was like "wait! I'm not a selfish person!!"
;)

#28 of 47 by bubu on Sun May 26 19:46:44 1996:

I will se what I can do about maybe rewriting the program a bit to maybe
include comments...

#29 of 47 by marcvh on Mon May 27 05:12:52 1996:

Re #24: Can you expand on the difference between friends and a
social life? What, for instance, would it mean to have one but
not the other?

#30 of 47 by birdlady on Tue May 28 17:42:07 1996:

#1 - family and friends who count as family
#2 - friends
#3 - school
#4 - my job
#5 - vacation time

#31 of 47 by orinoco on Fri Jan 2 16:08:37 1998:

It's been awhile, but...

#1 - Friends
#2 - Interests
#3 - Family
#4 - School

#32 of 47 by scg on Tue Jan 6 07:30:10 1998:

What I will say when asked what is important:
Family
Work
Friends
Various other interests

Where my time goes when I need to make decisions on how to spend it:
Work
Family
Finding time for myself
Friends
Various other interests.

#33 of 47 by scg on Wed Jan 7 06:26:33 1998:

Hmm... I've been doing a lot of thinking about my last response, and decided
I'm not very happy with it. The ranking I gave things in there are in the
order I allocate my time in in everyday life. Still, if there were a
situation where at a particular time my family really needed me, and work
really needed me, there is no question that my family would come first.

#34 of 47 by clees on Wed Jan 7 13:43:54 1998:

Using your list it would in my case be:
Friends
Family
Various
Work

in spending actual time:
Work
friends
various
Family
Zis is not very good

#35 of 47 by mta on Thu Jan 8 23:51:42 1998:

I'd have trouble deciding on this one -- I mean, I'm the sole support of my
family, so choosing between family and job would be hard. One depends on the
other. And my family consists of a son living with me, a son living in
Europe, and a husband who is a newcoewr to the family unit. What they need
from me is very different. So family wouldn't work as a single unit.

*sigh* I guess I juggle priorities and whoever needs me most right now comes
to the top of the queue.
