have all the historians and corresponding buffs left Grex?

History takes time.
Do you have something to say about history? Enter it in this conference. Activity begets activity. "Build it and they will come."
But remember, don't discuss military history. That leaves me out...
Why not? Military history is very interesting. I wish I knew more about it.
In item 1, the fairwitness suggested avoiding military history. Is a (non-violent) coup in order?
History repeats itself, and that's one of the things that's wrong with history. -Clarence Darrow
re #5, sorry I probably forgot that. Well that's a bummer, as I indicated in 4. It's one thing to disapprove of military operations, but I can't see the point of not talking about them. They won't go away if you ignore them. In fact maybe they will if you talk about them *enough*.
If I remember what he said, his concern was the kind of discussion that military-history buffs get into - endless & very technical discussions of battles presupposing knowledge of details that no one else here would know. I can't imagine that becoming a problem here, & I don't think polygon is likely to suppress discussion of military history in any way, anyway. If a coup could limit itself to a few items (at first, anyway), anyone who objects can forget them. IMO items on military history would be welcome, especially if they can be kept at a level non-specialists can relate to. (Larry, I just put some words in your mouth, & you're entitled to object if I'm wrong.)
History is constantly in the making. We'll get more history soon.
hey! I proved remmers point by entering an item! I should do that more often! <carson runs off to post items in various unsavory conferences>
I have reconsidered. Please consider my earlier comments on military history retracted.
There's a good conference saving idea by a fairwitness! Here we go.... :)
("And then General McClellan moved his troops two miles upstream,
where they camped near the village of Gooney Point...")
(You left out where they took a side trip into the bushes, en route.) History is little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind. -Edward Gibbon
I just listened on NPR to an account from a survivor of the Nazi siege of Leningrad in 1942-44. It was quite moving. I think NPR was trying to show a similarity to the current siege of Sarajevo. I am afraid that the Sarajevans will not be rescued by their countrymen as the Leningrad folks were. It seems that there are lots of holes in this parallel.
I'm going to another conference.
Why vidar, are the realities of war too brutal for you? This is the purpose of history. We study the past so we can learn from it.
Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. -Abraham Lincoln
Realities of war too brutal? Ha! I say old chap, you must have lost your bloody mind. I love war as does my cousin.
Then why do you run away (#16) in response to my #15?
Because I couldn't think of any intelligent response except to tell you that I was switching conferences.
Well, I understand now, but it mislead me. Why did you have to say anything?
That's drift bait.... I'll freeze this before he gets the chance.
