Anyone wathcing the new syndacated TV series, _The_Untouchables_? I enjoy the series and I think I've caught most of the esisodes. Watching it makes me realize that I was able to graduate from both a pretty good high school and EMU's college of Arts and Sciences without learning a lot of history. Has anyone read Ness's book that the series is alledgedly based on? How historically accurate is the series? I like this series better than the episodes of the old Untouchables series I've seen. I've also seen the movie version. Which comes closest to depicting history?

I have only seen the old series, and I believe it's quite inaccurate in that it glorified his exploits. I'd like to see a good answer to #0, myself.
I've seen some of the older series, but not any of the newer ones. I may have seen the movie, and I think I've seen the odd PBS special or read mention of him or something. So far as I recall, his major claim to fame was in gangster wars of the 30's - including some "big" names back then. In the larger historical sense, then, he's not that important - he didn't start any wars, invade any countries, or otherwise change the course of human events. For the time, he was certainly quite competent, although I'm not sure just how well his crime enforcement activities would be received today. He was also, apparently, rather more honest & dedicated than most cops - and his life had a rather sad and lonely ending perhaps in consequence.
That show has been off teh air for years... Looks like this confernece is for the histroy book! ..the jokes get lamer, folks....I LOVE THIS CONFERENC
Eliot Ness was from Cleveland. I've been told he got his rep from cleaning up the Flats.
Here I am sitting at a computer wit Alta Vista in the background, so I dumped in Eliot Ness, and in three seconds up came a bunch of hits, and here is *numero uno*! * Aktie * 121 min. * 16 * R: Brian de Palma * A: Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner & Andy Garcia * M: Ennio Morricone * The WEB is sure amazing....
Yep, Ness was in Dutch with Al Capone all right.
