Grex Hippie Item 66: Veggie Restaurants/Experiences
Entered by bdp on Wed Mar 23 04:50:39 UTC 1994:

Does anyone know of any places with unique veggie fare in the AA area?
I turned veggie in June, and I'm having fun exploring the different places
that you'd never know were veg-friendly. Tonight, for instance, I went
to the Chicago Dog House, and found that they offer two types of tofu
"hot dogs", a tempeh burger, and a "no dog." Cool, eh? :)

I have a list of places with veggie stuff, but I want to hear about others'
experiences in restaurants.

I had a tofu hot dog once, I was tempted to wash it down with a barbed-wire
milkshake. <Bleah!>

There's a vegetarian Chinese restaurant on Packard near Stadium that's
pretty good.

Sweet Lorraine's, located on the lower level of the Market Place
building, at Kerrytown, has an extensive menu including loads of
delicious vegetarian dishes. The decor is funky too, kinda
like someone put Picasso paintings and a dash of Art Deco in a
blender and let 'er rip.

Interesting, I seem to remember Steve himself saying that he bought the tofu
dogs so the veggies in the attendance would have something to eat, but
that when he himself tried one he thought they were pretty sad.

I'm afraid I'm a hopeless carnivore, my favorite dish is sushi.

Hey, even sushi can be vegetarian - try Seva's Nori Night - you'll like it! :)
(every Wed.)

Did anyone mention Afternoon Delight? At the corner of Fifth and
Liberty it *is* Ann Arbor. And what's this about the Spaghetti
Machine having the best salad bar? AD's rules.

Regarding seva, it may be vegetarian but it's not necessarily healthy.
Last time I was there the food was tasty but they seem to like to use
_lots_ of greasy cheese!

Shushi hot dogs. Interesting idea. Thanks for the tip. ;-)

I've come a little more to accepting tofu dogs, myself.
The first time I had one I would have agreed about barbed wire
milkshakes. But things do evolve over time, and vegetarians
have said they'd prefer tofu tube steaks to taste like food,
so they are approaching that. Yeve's makes a reasonable
product, as is the Not Dog.

No one has mentioned Jeresuleum Garden's yet, which has a
really incredible falafel sandwich for $2 that is truely
wonderful. So there are things veggie style that are
excellent.

Don't expect it here yet, but McDonald's has a veggie
soy burger. It is being test marketed in Germany and somewhere
on the left coast. That'll be a kick to see.

Burger King is test marketing a spicy bean burger in (I believe) Iceland. :)
A couple of places in New York now have it too...

Yeah, it's actually kind of frightening when you consider how much tofu
hot dogs taste like the real dead animal.

Downtown, Hinodae (Japanese restaurant in same
building as Oz's ) has a fair number of veggie offerings and
Wolverine Hideaway (across from MLB) has some really cheap
lenitl soup and falafel sandwiches.

Wolverine Hideaway? never knew it existed... I'll have to try that one...
and Hinodae. :)

hmm, I'll have to dig up that copy of Vegetarian Times that talked about
the spicy bean burger... I could've sworn it was somewhere else, and that
they were having a lot of success with it. Oh well.

Toronto is more fun than New York anyhow. :)

1. Dinersty has 10-15 vegetable entries, but the veggie soups seem to have
an animal broth base.
2. Ayse's Turkish Cafe - mostly all the prepared dishes are vegan, made with
oil, and it is $8.50 for a large sampler plate, whole wheat pita, gourmet
cooking. Cheese in the bulgur salad.
3. Siam Kitchen in Braun Court has several vegetarian lunches, and many other
dishes are available with pork, chicken shrimp or tofu.
4. Star Buffet on Washtenaw, quite a few non-meat choices, cheap, just east
of Stadium.
5. Other buffets: several Indian ones in town, Old Country Kitchen (lots of
salads and vegetables, but may be buttered), Korean buffet, Mexican
restaurants (if you eat cheese, especially) but the one in Ypsi puts lard in
things.
6. Big Market Cafe - purchase by the pound, eat there or take out. Whole
wheat pita, humus, tabouli, etc, some baked in their bakery.
7. Fireside Store has a bakery and deli, if you eat cheese, and tables
outside (on Huron near the tracks)

a bit far from Ann Arbor, but I just went to an awesome veggie restaurant
called Re-bar's in Vicoria B.C. Sort of a hipster, cafe-style Seva, but with
more taste (I love Seva, but it can be a bit bland), I had the Monk's curry:
shitakes, chick peas, and really fresh veggies in curry over basmati rice, and
a great french roast coffee - and it was cheap too, (though nothing beats Jeru.
Garden) I've been away from AA for 2 1/2 years now, and am looking forward to
visiting and eating!! Do many places serve Gardenburgers? (the ones sold
commercially to restaurants are often thicker then the 'toaster' variety you
pick up at the store)

Isn't Victoria a beautiful city? I fell in love with it
at first sight. I can't remember the name of the restaurant
but we had a elegant dinner there, at a table next to a
window overlooking the harbor, at sunset.

For someone who has a thing for little white lights,
Victoria is the jackpot.

yeah, it's a great place, I also made it up an over to the Pacific Rim Nat.
Park along the coast and to Tofino, which was gorgeous but the restaurants were
expensive and uninspiring from a veggie standpoint, couldn't even find decent
deserts - did see a Minke whale from the ferry on the trip back to Washington,
pretty cool that.

Veggie food is so hard to find in America?
That's too bad for real veggies.
I mean, here in India, you find most(at least half) of the restaurants
serve *only* veg food.

#20 of 22 by md on Fri Mar 26 12:31:20 1999:

There's a big new vegetarian restaurant in West Bloomfield
on Haggerty across from the Meijers north of Maple. It's
always packed.

#21 of 22 by klg on Sat Mar 27 18:13:33 1999:

It wasn't "packed" @ 6 p.m. yesterday. By 6:300 it was
rather full, tho.

#22 of 22 by klg on Fri Jan 9 17:35:19 2004:

It's no longer packed, having packed up and moved out a couple years
ago.
