I have just installed a new web page for Grex. This is not all my own doing.
It was motivated by suggestions from many people, but most notable by
Jan Wolter, who did some of the design for it as well.

There is a new FAQ which it points to = which is vastly improved.
Currently only available in HTML format, but we'll try to make a text version
of it, too.

Both the web page and the FAQ are likely to see changes and improvements, as
people like you send in useful ideas. The best place to discuss this is
item 109 in coop (item:coop,109).

New Web Page = Good :)

Nice work Steve and Jan

I have converted the new web-based FAQ to text form and replaced the old
one with it. This affects the faq command and a few other things.

The auction is now open for business! Type "j auction" at an "Ok:" prompt,
or click on this: conf:auction if you're using Backtalk. (Did I do that
right?)

Looks like it to me!

there's a surprising amount of stuff avalible in the auction, too.

There's quite a bit, and I will be gradually adding the books that tpryan
donated, so keep checking in!

Tim also donated two more PS/2's to Kiwanis, for which many thanks. He was
telling us about the books.

"mutt" looked pretty reasonable in a 30-second test. :-) I especially like
that it doesn't automatically move message to your local inbox.

I have added some more frequently asked questions (and answers) to the
Grex FAQ. I also added a few more groupings, so that it is easy to find the
section you need.

type the faq command or browse http://www.cyberspace.org/faq.html

Yet another reason to be excited about the growth of support for PNG...

#16 of 24 by remmers on Tue Aug 4 13:55:52 1998:

(What is PNG?)

#17 of 24 by eieio on Tue Aug 4 15:34:14 1998:

Progressive Network Graphics, a new graphic format supported by the 4.0
browsers. Among other things, it allows 8-bit transparency, which would
eliminate the problems mentioned before with on/off transparency.

re 14: Valerie has joined the Army of Light to rid the universe of
Shadows?

re #19. FSF pages don't have GIF files, but they do have JPEG files.

(Please see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html for more details)

#21 of 24 by jazz on Wed Aug 5 12:35:39 1998:

Yep, GNU's got a real political stance on that. I'm unsure of the
history behind the FSF's and GNU's stance, other than that CompuServe (which
really doesn't exist anymore) had originally patented the format.

#22 of 24 by gull on Wed Aug 5 15:34:37 1998:

I think Unisys now claims all rights to the LZH compression used in GIF, as
well, meaning you need to license the algorithm from them if you want to
write a GIF encoder or decoder. I may be remembering wrong, tho, so someone
can correct me if they know the real story.

Do Netscape and IE support PNG yet?

#23 of 24 by eieio on Wed Aug 5 19:12:39 1998:

Yes, as stated in response 17.

It's LZW compression, named for Lempel, Ziv and Welch, which is somewhat
similar to run-length encoding. TIFF also uses LZW compression. I could go
into its quirks (ie, horizontal lines compress much better than vertical)
but its basic benefit is the fact that it's non-lossy.

And now there is such a thing as a JPEG-compressed TIFF. Help us all.

#24 of 24 by gull on Wed Aug 5 20:48:59 1998:

Yeah -- I found, much to my annoyance, that Microsoft Imaging uses that TIFF
format. Annoying, since I use TIFF as an interchange format, and none of my
other software understands the JPEG-compressed variety. Besides, I use TIFF
specifically because it's non-lossy.
