I have been working on grex's menu pages for the past weeks. There is a link to "interesting topics" on the main menu. I took the liberty in deleting the links that were contained in topics.html andI replaced with something that could be called "Interesting Topic" It will basically be a story i find on the internet. I will change it say, every month. That way it will give some of the users to go back to this page, or so i think ;) Well Take a look at it and feedback is welcome.
ok just in case you need directions how to get to this page. it's under Searching the Internet on the lynx's main menu.
re #1 beware of copyright problems if you're going to include other people's work directly -- perhaps it would be better to just include a pointer to the source material..
you have a point.. i will do that too ;) thanks

I will be out of town for the next week. I'll try to check my mail while I'm gone, but if you or someone you meet is looking for information about Grex membership, you might get a faster answer by sending mail to staff rather than me.

People who need to read the motd message about the parity change probably can't read it. (*Not* a complaint - the change was announced well in advance, and at this point what else can we do? Just sticking my oar in ...)
I experimented with trying to write a useful message using only odd-numbered
characters "acegikmoqsuwy" so it would be readable by most people with even
parity set, but I didn't get far. I suppose I could have done something
like:
-------------------
--###---#---#--##--
-#---#--##--#---#--
--###---#-#-#---#--
-#---#--#--##---#--
--###---#---#--###-
-------------------
If you are new to Grex, login as "newuser"
login:
But I didn't think it would be that much help and I would have been pushing the
message length limit.
The polls are open for voting on a proposed amendment to Grex's bylaws to allow organizations as well as individuals to become members. Type !vote at a bbs or menu prompt, or just plain vote at a Unix shell prompt, for further information or to cast a ballot. Before voting, folks are urged to familiarize themselves with the issues by reading Item 100 of the Coop conference, where the proposal is discussed. The polls will close July 11 at midnight Eastern Daylight Time.
I could read the thing, i just couldn't log on. Though i found out what the problem was. =) It works now! I guess i better talk to marla about it as well, since its her puter i am currently using
I was able to read the message on the login screen, but everything was going very slowly. It was fine after I logged out and changed the settings.
I had no trouble at all, and had logged in and started mail before it occured to me that it was July 1st, and I needed to change my settings.
I had litle or no trouble, but changed my settings anyway after realizing the date
I changed the settings, but to me it looks as if every letter I type comes out duplicated. Weird.
That would be a "full" or "half" setting for "duplex". This also masquerades under the name "Local echo".

What is the current setup on slow modems/fast modems/Grex/ Groupie? I had trouble getting in o 3000 this morning because my normal modem speed setting was suddenly too fast for it to hand.e. I havent seen anyone coming in on groupie the past day or two. and 4931 and 5041 seem to be constantly busy for extremely long periods of time.
Well, I logged on and got "groupie". Granted, it took me several attempts to figure out what to do with it. ;) I will say this, it is FAST!!
All of our modems could be like that if we could get the glitches out.
The current modem setup has slow lines at 3000, 3 fast lines starting at 4931, and three terminal server lines starting at 5041. So there are currently 6 lines that run at 9600 or faster.

I just came in on groupie, and it telnetted me directly to Grex, just like it is supposed to. On weekends, there is almost never a telnet queue, and groupie is very nice to use, right now. (Just a data point, and observation.)
say the magic word at "groupie>" and get into grex!
like, groupie>connect grex
Well, I logged in and got the "groupie>" prompt and had to dial "telnet grex" in order to get a prompt, from there, it works fine. Is that the right thing to do...or am I (in a sense) tying up two lines or something like that?
No, that's the right thing to do.
I found and fixed the problem. I'm not sure if ti was a case of groupie losing a setting, or me not setting it right in the first place. It was the same port that was previously displaying the menu, so I may have only fixed part of the misconfiguration then.
Groupie sent me straight to a login prompt. It's working great at the moment.
Oops, it just gave me the groupie> prompt. It looks like it didn't save the changes I made earlier. I changed it again, and it looks like it did save it this time. I also think I understand why it didn't save it the first time.
i played wth the groupie> help screens for a while.. then decided to telnet grex.org which worked just fine. it's when i get an absolutely blank screen (cursor at 0,0) that baffles me- -what then?
I think at that point it's just waiting for Grex to respond and open the telnet session. Groupie is now running the latest version of the Chase Iolan operating system, rather than the several year old version it came with. Hopefully that should help things.
When I get a blank screen, I type something in to see waht I get. often I get garbled garbage. Occasionally I type in my login onto a blank screen, press enter, and magically get a "senna's password:" prompt. It varies.
Last time I dialed in through groupie it hung up on me before I got all the way to a csh prompt. The time before that it froze before echoing the "c" in "janc" while I was logging in. Groupie doesn't seem to like me.
I've been having repeated problems using the reset command to fix my term settings on grex when I dail into grex... I think it is still set to the old parity...
This is short notice, but following tradition -- since tomorrow (Tuesday, July 15) is the eve of the Art Fair in Ann Arbor -- Mary and I will be hanging out at a restaurant in downtown A2 watching folks prepare for Wednesday's chaos. Any Grexers who care to are welcome to join us and share in the calm before the storm. This year we'll be at Grizzly Peak Brewing Co, 120 West Washington, 7 p.m. Be there or be unFair. That's Tuesday, July 15.
Cool. I'll try to be there.
I don't do downtown during Art Fair. Sorry.
Wish I could, Remmers. Already committed for tomorrow night. Parking downtown was really easy today, though.
I would like to announce that I have drawn some replacement buttons for Backtalk's Pistachio interface. These are more 3-dimensional, and we plan to replace the current ones. First I will change the button menu for fairwitnesses so that they cam select the new ones. I will also change the default buttons at that time. I will do this soon, but not tonight, as it has gotten too late. If you want a sneak preview, you can check out backtalk on HVCN, or else look at these buttons (active and disabled) in your browser http://www.hvcn.org/hvcnconf/image/pistachio/bgn/nextitem.gif http://www.hvcn.org/hvcnconf/image/pistachio/ggn/nextitem.gif coming soon, in a variety of colors.
