I would like to announce that my untimely link request (item #2, linked from the music conferences, "Grexers on Stage") has bollixed up the traditional item numbering. Sigh. If splatting the "stage" item could help fix Agora, please do so; the item can be relinked from music.

Thanks!
I like the traditional numbering better. :)
Root abuse! Root abuse! (Just doing a good deed and validating Valerie's need to play the victim.) ;-)

Could someone in the know make an announcement here about the progress of assembling the new hardware/software? Plus maybe a pointer to the item with more details?
(If Valerie really is into playing the victim, I warmly invite her to M-Net. Wanna run for the Arbornet Board...?)
We have almost all the hardware needed to go to the 4/670MP. All we dont' have is half of the memory we will be running, on the assumption that prices will continue to fall. We finally managed to build a kernal and get the 670 to boot. Now, we are waiting on someone with enough knowledge to find the time to apply all the correct patches to the kernel and rebuild it for the 670. After that, it's merely a case of putting the ALM cards in the 670, swapping in the correct disks, and rebooting. There is an item in the Garage cf that has all the current info on the 670 project, but I don't know the number offhand.

Do you always assume comments which make you feel uncomfortable are made with the intention of hurting you? (You've just give a great example of how playing the victim can work like a charm.) I know, I know, this is drift. Some folks habitually correct spelling mistakes. Others correct gender-assumption terminology. I find self-victimization as a form of self-defense (mostly used by women) interesting and worthy of correction. Sometimes. It's a subtle point of interest not shared by many and certainly not to be taken as a personal attack. Almost everyone does it from time to time.
That which in the first sentence should be a *that*.
;-) You are sitting at a staff meeting. Everyone is going around the table giving their ideas on how a project should go. One person starts by saying, "I know this is probably a dumb idea and I'm going to be beaned for saying this, but...". Now, if you were going to play the odds what is the sex of the person speaking that line? And why? It isn't simply low self-esteem. I find it more a technique for gathering sympathy for your opinion, of avoiding any negative reactions because you are already presenting yourself as wounded. This person is asking for mercy, up-front. Women do this very well. It's manipulative. It works. I find it fascinating they get away with it. Again, everyone does this to some degree or another and my observations are not aimed at anyone in particular.
It's a good idea.. No one will want to heavily criticize someone like that for fear of looking predictable and mena. mean even.
Mary, I do that often enough...and so do lots of other males. It's not a female majority case. I don't think Valerie meant to draw sympathy or the like from her comment.

Some people actually do it genuinly, and others just do it ounconscioulsly, though. I'ts not necessarily calculated wow, we're getting off topic.
I saw someone use the method that mary describes regularly when a newbie on a board with several hot-tempered long-timers. It was quite successful, and a disproportionate number of this person's proposals were adopted. He was a retired man, pleasantly self-confidient, widely respected, and quite popular (esp. with the ladies...). I'd say that the method isn't inherently good, bad, or indifferent - it depends on the context.
so , uh, when's the next Grex night out? (tries to change the subject.)
I'm currently Backtalking and it is running as well as I've ever seen it...went through 17 new agora items and 10 new coop items in under 10 minutes flat! **Richard congratulates staff for successful work on the router**
whatever did that mean?
Backtalk is a Web version of PicoSpan. The router work *wasn't* successful, though. Richard just connectded at a really good time.
I noticed, seeing as telnet was dad again last night
This item has also been linked from agora to helpers. I guess it qualifies as a system announcement. I've stepped in to fill a tiny bit of the vaccuum left by robh's departure from the conferences.

Actually, not really. It's a bit more complicated than that.

Good. Often, when I get a 2400 baud modem, connecting noise set sets me up for an uppercase session. Today, I see, we are getting another form of noise as all participants names are no longer unique ;-)
One of Grex's newer, harder to program modems is available on a test basis. Try dialing 761-9671 if you want to try it out. Please note here what kind of experience you had with it.
does it by any chance have the ability to garble text so that the characters are all messed up?
Polls are now open to fill a vacancy on Grex's Board of Directors. Type vote from a shell prompt or !vote from a bbs or menu prompt for further information or to cast a ballot. The polls will close midnight April 21, Eastern Daylight Time.

Are grex's "fast" modems capable of anything faster than 9600 baud?
We own 14.4 modems but they are configured to operate 9600 (or 2400) because the capacity of grex to process data is limited. We can take to the garage conference discusion about why and what can be done about it.
I want Robh back! Can I vote for that? <sigh>
I remain commentless on the entire situation.. I'm glad I blanked out of cfs while the debate was going on.
