a modem in the 761-5041 chain is ringing open, as is one in the 761-0000,
could be the same one, i didn't have the phone numbers to check all of them.

#2 of 187 by scg on Sun Mar 23 06:56:54 1997:

Yes, one of our lines is dead. Somebody is dealing with Ameritech about
getting it fixed, I think.

#3 of 187 by dang on Sun Mar 23 21:03:40 1997:

It is now out of the hunt group, so it shouldn't be ringing open. (It was the
last line, so it was in both)

#4 of 187 by bmoran on Mon Mar 24 15:02:41 1997:

As there is snow on the ground and it's still quite cold, I believe mud is
slightly slower than grex today.

I haven't been able to get a dial in port by dialing the 5041 prefix
recently.. it's always busy, even when it obviously shouldn't be.

#8 of 187 by senna on Tue Mar 25 23:45:19 1997:

That's possible, because I did get it to work in the morning. Of course,
later in the morning, I had trouble getting it again.... when next to nobody
was dialing in (having checked the list in telnet). That's probably what it
is.

#9 of 187 by ndhoot on Wed Mar 26 21:23:11 1997:

why is it that talk on the grex doesnot work anymore? it was such an useful
tool in times of necessity. could bring people closer!!!

#10 of 187 by senna on Thu Mar 27 07:23:42 1997:

Well, some people don't paticularly want it back. I understand that it's
being worked on, though. Anyone know what's wrong with telnet?

#11 of 187 by ryan1 on Thu Mar 27 21:18:59 1997:

<drift> I would like a `mesg` option to allow talk requests from people
on computers OTHER than grex, however refuse the requests from people
who are on Grex. If somebody is on Grex, I would rather that they sent
me a telegram, because the talk program monopolizes your telnet session.
</drift>

#12 of 187 by senna on Fri Mar 28 00:54:18 1997:

That would be nice. I never use talk anyway, htthere are better ways
ofcommunicating.

#13 of 187 by dbassman on Fri Mar 28 01:17:31 1997:

talks only useful if the receiving servers a fast one.

withn the last hour, two grex dialins answered, one to garbage, and
one to a blank screen. nothing cured either situation. this session
is not a dialin.

#16 of 187 by i on Fri Mar 28 14:18:28 1997:

Same problem as #15 within the last half hour. But this session is a dial-
in, and seems perfect (so far...).

#17 of 187 by dpc on Fri Mar 28 20:37:04 1997:

A few minutes ago I tried to dialin on 761-3000. I got a steady tone
from a Grex modem instead of a matching attempt. I redialed on
761-4931 and got in normally.
Also, why is the load average *over 20*?

#18 of 187 by senna on Fri Mar 28 22:44:57 1997:

My dialin problems might ahve to do something with the terminal I'm coimming
in from, and may need some recalibaration. Right now I"m telnetted, seems
to be working okay.

#19 of 187 by scott on Fri Mar 28 23:57:35 1997:

We were off the Net for a bit, so the high load average was likely mail
catch-up.

really? that's odd... after I got garbage, I reconfigured and got a clean
connection, didn't see my name on the users list. was it this login?

I think raven had a similar problem.. I accidently dialed directly into his
login once

Regarding User Name: Sure I eat tofu, but I don't brag about it. (At least
I have numerous companions.).

#26 of 187 by nako on Tue Apr 1 18:10:50 1997:

The mail queue appears to be stuck again. Are we close to reboot time
yet?

#27 of 187 by drew on Tue Apr 1 18:59:05 1997:

Grex's internet connection does not answer. A first, usually it's m-net's
that's hosed.

#28 of 187 by scg on Tue Apr 1 19:09:41 1997:

There seems to be a routing problem at our provider.

#29 of 187 by dang on Tue Apr 1 20:36:15 1997:

It has been fixed and broken twice by them (Actually the other way around,
as it works now) and hopefully will work now.

Re 25: Wait a day. The Tofu and Beef will go away.

Probably you temporarily exhausted the supply of zerros left in the
  /dev/zero queue.. :-)

Actualy, probably either a messed up /dev file or a shared lib problem.

#33 of 187 by dpc on Wed Apr 9 19:25:01 1997:

I'm getting the "chopped-up responses" problem again. I am on ttyh3.
I *think* this is the same modem that was doing this a couple months
ago.

#34 of 187 by tsty on Fri Apr 11 05:04:17 1997:

naughty-naughty mcnally .................... tsk

#35 of 187 by dpc on Sun Apr 27 22:54:02 1997:

Around 2:00 this afternoon I *tried* to log on. Well, actually,
I dialed 761-3000, some modem connected, I saw part of the MOTD,
and then Grex hung up on me!

Hi. I typed pine and got the normal pine screen for a moment. Then it
printed out "Floating exception" and kicked me back out and gave me a UNIX
prompt. I tried again, same thing happened. Any ideas?

#38 of 187 by kaplan on Mon Apr 28 01:29:39 1997:

Use oldpine instead of pine. The version of pine on grex was replaced
recently in case anyone doesn't know.

#39 of 187 by davel on Mon Apr 28 10:46:13 1997:

Re 36: I *think* he meant that he saw part of the MOTD without logging in,
if I'm reading it right. Sounds like some lag in hanging up?
