I really would like to encourage more people to keep their help flags on more of the time. It's a great mechanism for helping out new users, and the more people help out, the less of a burden it is on any individual.
Yow. I'm embarassed by that 457. I'm happy to see that popcorn is doing so well, though.
I went on sabbatical in January....may be back as a helper when I recover. But one almost has to *live* here, to still get other things done.

I guess I'm spending less time on grex. Of course it's getting harder to get on grex these days. -sigh-

Uy! Any idea when those 131 requests were made? (As in, what time of day?)
One of those two of mine I couldn't help, at that. He was trying to update his home page, using pico, & complained that he did everything right but that the changes just vanished. I looked at permissions & asked about exactly what procedure he was using, but everything sounded right. I suggested he try Rob H. on the theory of maybe-it-has-something-to-do-with-its-being-a-home-page, but that seems really unlikely. <sigh>
Is this log file publically readable?
I'm pretty sure it isn't.
I just happened on another possible counting problem with the unanswered count. I got a help request, but by the time I was able to quit out of where I was (very heavy lag last night) the requestor had cancelled his request. When I wrote to him to see what he had wanted, he didn't respond.

I answered one request around 1:30 this morning. :)

Last month I had 2 (or maybe 3) help requesters whoended theri write session before I had a chance to get to them (dratted lag). How often does this happen to others ?
When the system is slow, it happens once in a while. I just write back and say "Write back to me if you still need help."
It happens pretty often. I think lots of people request help by accident, and leave as fast as they can.

I've been noticing that my help flag hasn't been set sometimes, which is odd, because I didn't change anything in my .login or bin directory.

I assume the flag goes down anytime you run screen, right? Since the screens are on seperate ttys from your logon tty, the help flag defaults to off when you enter them. When you exit screen, the flag returns. Probably the best way to handle this is to place 'mesg -h y' in your .cshrc. The flag will go up whenever you start up csh, instead of only when you log in. That may cause problems if you turn your flag off, though.
Nope, I haven't used screen in months. I've figured out that it only happens after I've su'ed to root, so I've writtena n alis for su that takes care of it.
I don't understand why su'ing to root would do that.

Hmm, there's a thought...

Where should I go? >8)

OK, new rule - just as all Grex users are named "Steve", all Grex helpers will now be named "Rob". >8)

You should change your name. The command to do that is "chfn". >8)

This is getting confusing...
