Does anyone know why the freeshell accounts are now working, but only if you
ssh to sdf.lonestar.org instead of freeshell.org? Load average only about
2 for sdf (up to 12 for another computer). Up since a day ago.

There is apparently some sort of Kernel problem and there are not enough ttys
available. At least that is what I read on the board there.

I also had to tweak my quotas back up from 0.

Grex's mail has been hosed by a spam weasel from the Netherlands.
I'm in the process of flushing it, but it took an HOUR just to run
mailq and see what was in there, so this is going to take some time.
At the moment exim is disabled, but Grex was so choked the last few
days that this will be an improvement. After this twonk's mail is
taken care of I will look at the rest of it to see what garbage is
in there, and then will reanable exim so Grex can have mail again.

I thought grex mail was down all week. Thanks STeve.

STeve is off to bed since he has to get up early tomorrow. He will finish
the process as soon as he is at work in the morning.

Mail is being processed again. I am twiddling exim config stuff to
better be able to handle the load. I'm off to a meeting now, but will
be looking at stuff when I'm out. Right now we're trying to catch up
on the hordes of mail thats been waiting for us, and trying to deliver
local mail. Things are working, but its going to take more adjustments
to get stuff optimally working. I don't think that exim has ever
seen working quite right, in terms of how many incoming connections
it handles, etc. But we're getting there now.

We just got the first response to Jim's car ad for a week. Thanks.

#19 of 33 by steve on Wed Jun 14 22:18:42 2006:

Grex's mail is running, and may actually be catching up with items.

#20 of 33 by steve on Thu Jun 15 01:59:01 2006:

Grex seems to be caught up with mail now--it took about 50 seconds
to send mail to my work address. I'll be keeping an eye on things.

Yes, much thanks to STeve. In 25WOL, how was a "spam weasel" able to "hose"
grex e-mail?

I agree with Dan. I don't understand the mechanism involved here, either.

#28 of 33 by steve on Sat Jun 17 02:06:33 2006:

We ran out of inodes, for one thing. That'll stop anything writing
to the disk. The other problem was that exim wasn't configured for
anywhere near enough instances of itself to be able to catch up on
mail. Once I changed things to allow 200 copies to run, about 105
exim's popped into life for some hours.

#29 of 33 by scholar on Sat Jun 17 03:23:04 2006:

(it won't stop everything from writing to the disk.)

#30 of 33 by steve on Sun Jun 18 06:56:19 2006:

It'll stop most things. A write that doesn't require a new inode
would in fact work, you are right, but new files couldn't be created.

#31 of 33 by tsty on Thu Jun 22 06:03:43 2006:

are resp 13-30 the reason i suddenly got about 1.2 meg of spam on 14 jun?

and a few email send-dated 14 jun adn received 7jun ????

and a few questoins about the weird back datiing?

#32 of 33 by steve on Tue Jun 27 16:20:46 2006:

There was cruft that was stuck in the queue. Once I got the
dreck that the spammer shoved in, older things came out.
