This item is for system announcements (new computer equipment on Grex, system upgrades, Grex meetings, etc.). Personal announcements should go back in item 2; Grex system *problems* belong in the next item (#4).

Grex now has a new kernel (heart of the os), which should fix the crashing problem we were having ever 5 days or so.
Thanks, STeve. Just curious - how many hours worth of time did that task take you?

re #3 Hey..some people like to re-seat RAM and others like to buy new ones, ok? Maybe it was a re-install of the same kernel over the old one? ;)
Mary, it took likely about 8 hours total, but most of that time was fighting getting the new source code. The "CVS server", the entity that lets you get new versions of the code was flaky and it took several attempts to get the updates for the kernel. Once I got that it took less than an hour to build a new one, and a few hours testing it to make sure that it was reasonable. Yes, I agree that the 3.8 patches are in a weird state: they should be more readily announced. I knew of them since I see the changes in the CVS logs.
I guess grex is contributing to OpenBSD development by crashing, or don't we report problems?

Grex, then. Right?
Grex's certificate is expired since August 6, 2005. I am not sure why Grex and M-Net installed certificates in the first place, but if they've got to be there, they ought to be kept up to date.
We'd report problems Sindi, if we encounter new ones. So far, we haven't. Thats simply not true Dan, but I'm not going to argue that point.
Nominations are open to fill the Grex board of directors vacancies created by the resignations of Steve Van Loon (vanloons) and David Cahill (dpc). See Coop item 305 for more information and to make nominations.
See http://www.cyberspace.org/local/grex/bod.html for a list of current and former Directors.

The polls are open now through February 6 in the special election to fill two unexpired terms on the Grex Board of Directors. For more information, or to cast a ballot, type 'vote' at a Unix shell prompt, '!vote' at most other prompts, or go to https://grex.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth on the web. It's a non-competitive election (two candidates, two slots), but you should vote anyway. :) As usual, any Grex user can vote, but only the votes of members in good standing will be counted in determining the pre-ordained outcome. For information on becoming a member, type 'support' at a Unix shell prompt, '!support' elsewhere, or go to http://grex.org/member.html on the web.
Grex was rebooted Saturday morning to effect a change I just made. In Janurary I made a new kernel for the system, which had a fix for the "soft dependency" problem in the stock 3.8 release. This fix has made the softdep situation better, in that we were up for 26 days before a crash. It's still variable however when the problem crops up, and we crashed after 4 days this last time. So, the system isn't going to use them any more. The effect here is that disk writes will take longer, or rather that writes won't be done independantly of other things. I do not think this is going to slow Grex down much, if at all.
Thanks, STeve.
THanks, steVE.

Because Theo don't want it that way Dan. How dare you question Theo! :P
FreeBSD has had problems with softupdates as well Dan. I know know of some folks who have tuned them off for both Open and FreeBSD.

I remember it well...
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered United States flags to be flown at half-staff throughout the state of Michigan today through Wednesday, February 8, in honor of Coretta Scott King. The Governor s order follows a similar proclamation issued by the President for federal buildings. In addition to ordering flags lowered to half-staff, Granholm will proclaim Friday, February 10, Coretta Scott King Day in the state of Michigan.
Anyone who fancies having sex right now shall commence the lowering of pants.
IWLTA I am drinking Diet Coke with Splenda. The glass is half full.
Now it is half empty.
Stop using oversized glass.
The Grex status page says Grex is up... and that the status was updated on February 3. Is there a way to have the system update this with the current date- time stamp, perhaps once per hour? Maybe a cron job could add a date- time stamp to a file and then FTP the file over to the status page on HVCN or something. If I were having trouble connecting, that status message would not do much to reassure me that Grex is working and the problem is on my end.
What you suggest doesn't make a lot of sense. If Grex were down, it would not be able to update the page to that effect. What would make sense is if the status page could have a script that pings Grex once an hour and reports the results and the timestamp. Staff could manually edit the page in case of an outage to supply additional information... SRW, what do you think? Is this a reasonable possibility?
Eric, if Grex cannot update the page, it would be a sign that Grex is down, wouodn't it? Make the message say: Grex was up as of 03/15/2006 09:30 a.m. If it is scheduled to update it every 10 minutes, and you see it hasn't been updated for a day, then Grex is down. I don't know which would provide better information, a ping or having Grex update an offsite page, but either would provide some information. If Grex is down because of staff work, then a staffer could provide additional information as it becomes available.
