Grex Helpers Item 142: Grex System Problems - Summer 2005
Entered by i on Wed Jun 22 02:47:28 UTC 2005:

This item is for system problems. If something on Grex isn't working
right (line noise on a modem, weird behavior from a program, etc.),
this is the place to announce it. Except for security holes. If you
find a hole in system security, mail information about it to "staff".

Backtalk seems to be burping today, its had various periods where its locked
up or slow. Picospan seems to be unaffected.

#3 of 281 by remmers on Thu Jun 23 15:25:45 2005:

Right. Only affects the new agora for me; other conferences are
as fast as usual in backtalk. Seems to be a backtalk bug - very
slow to respond the first time you join a conference, okay after
that. People have noticed this before. Afflicts fronttalk too.

#4 of 281 by nharmon on Thu Jun 23 16:13:54 2005:

/a is full again.

#5 of 281 by eprom on Thu Jun 23 17:29:14 2005:

/a is full again...how about a permanent solution instead of half-assing it?

#6 of 281 by naftee on Thu Jun 23 18:54:07 2005:

You're the ones who're being half-asses. Get a home directory on /c .
And yes, newuser is working.

#7 of 281 by asddsaasddsa on Thu Jun 23 18:54:48 2005:

See, it's easy.

I can't connect to Grex at all via the WWW today.

#11 of 281 by eprom on Thu Jun 23 22:38:52 2005:

re#6
I like my login and don't want to change it.

#12 of 281 by mcnally on Thu Jun 23 22:40:17 2005:

I'll see if I can figure out if there is some compelling reason
we can't just move a bunch of people en masse to balance things
 out a little bit.

#13 of 281 by naftee on Thu Jun 23 22:49:26 2005:

You guys are all unlucky. :(

#14 of 281 by mcnally on Thu Jun 23 23:22:32 2005:

I've made some space on /a temporarily (about 80MB, which should
take a few days to fill up, giving us time to discuss a long-term
 solution.)

Once again I'm unable to access the new Agora from backtalk or fronttalk.
If I go there once in Picospan, it works from then on.

#18 of 281 by richard on Fri Jun 24 21:11:17 2005:

re #17 same here, I cant reach the new agora at all from backtalk

#19 of 281 by jep on Fri Jun 24 21:51:25 2005:

I am able to use Backtalk now, and have been able to do so all day
today.

#20 of 281 by null on Fri Jun 24 21:54:17 2005:

Don't know... I'm using backtalk right now to post this.

#21 of 281 by keesan on Sat Jun 25 15:09:06 2005:

motd still says newuser is not working.
I got garbage when I dialed 484-0512 (did not check 0513) today.

#22 of 281 by gull on Sat Jun 25 21:57:34 2005:

Backtalk works for me now, but only because I used Picospan to get
myself set up in the new conference on Friday.

#23 of 281 by keesan on Sat Jun 25 22:13:47 2005:

The garbage on dialing could have been because we had our IRQs reversed.
Things are fine now.

#24 of 281 by aruba on Sun Jun 26 05:40:14 2005:

I fixed the motd.

#25 of 281 by rksjr on Sun Jun 26 20:43:28 2005:

At least as of circa 3:08 p.m., the login screen remains uninformative
that a newuser program is available:

>Trying... Connected to CYBERSPACE.ORG.
>
>
>OpenBSD/i386 (grex.cyberspace.org) (ttyp3)
>
>User not authenticated. Using plaintext username and password
>login:

#26 of 281 by rksjr on Sun Jun 26 21:26:38 2005:

Re. #25:
I.e., the number of newusers logging in could be increased by also
restoring the notice to the login screen. Until then, the only newusers
logging in will be those who are already aware of the newuser program.

Re. #27:
Even the website says that new accounts cannot be created :(

#28 of 281 by furs on Mon Jun 27 13:01:59 2005:

I had a ton of problems getting to the summer conf this time. It
doesn't appear to be letting me in from my conf list, but I can get to
it through cyberspace.org, and then click on conf areas and agora.
WEIRD!

#29 of 281 by naftee on Mon Jun 27 13:39:35 2005:

I"M GLAD YOU"RE HERE NOW< FURS

#30 of 281 by furs on Mon Jun 27 13:43:04 2005:

THANK YOU NAFTEE!

#31 of 281 by richard on Mon Jun 27 18:32:35 2005:

I still can't get into agora via backtalk. I can get into any of the other
confs but not summer agora

#32 of 281 by furs on Mon Jun 27 18:46:55 2005:

How did you just post then?

#33 of 281 by nharmon on Mon Jun 27 18:47:46 2005:

He used The Force(tm).

#34 of 281 by remmers on Tue Jun 28 00:53:15 2005:

Also known as "telnet".

This backtalk problem is weird, and seems to affect fronttalk as well.
I wasn't able to access summer Agora with either the first time I tried.
However, after joining Agora once with picospan, I could access Agora
just fine with backtalk.

#35 of 281 by cross on Tue Jun 28 13:56:42 2005:

This response has been erased.

#36 of 281 by gull on Tue Jun 28 15:30:12 2005:

It makes sense that the problem would affect both, since fronttalk is
just a command-line front end to backtalk.

#37 of 281 by scott on Tue Jun 28 15:41:08 2005:

My guess would be that backtalk either isn't creating the .agora??.cf file,
or is creating it with the wrong perms.

#38 of 281 by tsty on Thu Jun 30 13:08:21 2005:

repeated strange behaviour in mail....

situation ...sometimes two emails get 'stuck together' as one.

formerly, i was able to edit, put couple blamk lines between emails
and assure that first line of 2nd email started with From blah@bletch
and since the parser looks for From (not From:) saved stuff
workde JustFine (tm). parser also looks for zero-character line ahead
of From .

now, however ............. <<grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr>> edit says 'screw-you'
'i'm gonna stick a damn > character infrnt of your pissant From
trick and keep all th is shit stuck toegether just like i fscked it
up for you before! Thhhhbpbpbpbpbpbpb!!

with all this upgrade stuff, how, when sendmail jams 2->1 what sort of
magicv incantations are necessary to unstick so that 1->2 ?

#39 of 281 by jimj on Thu Jun 30 13:27:52 2005:

I've experienced the backtalk problem with agora. Usually I ssh in and
blow away .agora* in ~/.cfdir. Probably that's not a realistic option
for everyone since some people like to keep the status of the threads up
to date where I just mark everything as read after I visit each time anyway.

I've experienced the backtalk problem in a few other obscure conferences
over the past month or so. I think either comics or games was one. I
really don't remember.

It happened to me relatively recently when I was at the agora item
listing and I clicked on the 'mark all as seen', and as I was waiting
for it to refresh I middle-clicked to open in a new tab one of the items
that suddenly jumped out at me. After I closed that item I couldn't get
back into agora until I blew away my agora prefs. Maybe that will help
in tracking this down.
